after selling my crawler I needed a new project I always loved the look of the first gens so I went out looking. I am lucky enough to live in AZ where there is little rust so I have a good selection. I ended up buying an 82 the guy wanted 3500 after a few hours and a 18 pack I talked him down to 1650
basically just a real clean first gen I cant find any rust... original paint and I don't think anything has ever been hauled in the bed.
heres some pics of how it looked when I picked it up

Im not 100% sure what the plan is yet I originally wanted to build another crawler but this truck is in damn good shape soo I think ill just do a slow build and try to keep the body off the rocks for a while

heres what im thinking
4inch lift front springs or rears
rear 63s
built axles 5.29s and arbs high steer ifs rear axle
dual ultimate
bob bed maybe repaint it
Id like this truck to be a good daily driver for a while so im not sure what tires to go with.

got started on the truck yesterday pulled the front axle and stripped it down for gussets and armor
I saved some good stuff from when I sold my crawler for the front axle
5.29 high pinion ARB
30 spline longs and hub gears
ARP hub and steering studs
for the rear I have a v6 5.29 ARB

got the high steer in I also installed an ifs steering box I put it as far forward as possible had to do a little cutting to get it where I wanted.

also what direction am I supposed to put the marlin springs the longside towards the cab or the longside towards the front hanger?

The long side goes back towards the cab.  The double wrap leaf goes forward.
Relentless

I bobbed the bed 14 inches the truck was originally a long bed and its now 2 inches shorter than a stock short bed. (if I did it again id bob it 16 inches)  I also cut out the stock rear crossmember and added a new crossmember at the rearmost part of the frame out of some 3x2 box later ill add a hitch mount in the box for a D ring.

I took the whole bed off and welded it back together. when I had the bed off I cut out the rear xmember and replaced it with a new one out of some 2x3 I also added a new rear shock mount. I cut that lower section of the bed off behind the wheels Ill get a better pic this weekend of how it turned out. thats not me in the last pic thats my sisters boyfriend Chaz who helped a lot thanks bitches

finally got some sliders on the truck. I also got the rear done Chevy 63s I made the front hangers out of some 3.5 box that I cut down to 2.5 made them long and low so they wont get hung up as easily. I moved my front hangers forward 11 inches eye to eye and it seemed to move my rear axle back a bit. (next time ill use a plumb line)

tim (yotamonkey) upgraded from 36s to 42s so I got the pick of the best 4 36 iroks between his and mine I also got his 2.5bs steelies one being bent to hell. heres a pic stock with rear axle.

started to put my crawl box together
the goal for the weekend is put 4.7 in rear case install duals. figure out how to level the truck (rear sits 3 1/4 lower than front) and install the rear diamond if we get to it.

I didnt get as good of a start as I would have liked to this weekend
got the transfer case pulled and then pulled apart but that was it for Friday.
I had an issue with my marlin mc08 R10 adapter. when I assembled the crawl box I couldn't shift between high and low I must have pulled the box apart 15 times trying to figure it out I eventually pulled so hard on the shifter that I snapped the lower lever off and had to weld it back in place. I think I found the culprit it looks like the whole that was drilled out for the hi low shift fork wasn't fully drilled out therefore it wouldn't let me fully shift.
I hope that is the issue cause its a simple fix ill screw with it tomorrow

duals are in converted front case to top shift mc08 Rotated 10* 23spline adapter 4.7 in rear case twin sticks held up with front range crossmember and skid.

got the crossmember up as high as I could (bushings come through the floor) and had to clearance the floor as well. If I would have had a body lift I could have got the whole assembly up higher. In the future I might go with just a center section mount and build the rest myself. the arms on the crossmember are what limits how high you can go.
I also need to make a ring to hold the boot to the twin sticks down
you can also see my new sr5 buckets out of an 85 much better than the old bench

also got the rear diamond installed
rear is a taco width diamond housing with poly performance shafts v6 5.29 arb. disks are from a Chevy truck and homemade caliper brackets.

I bought this housing from Cary over at gotpropane he had it under his buggy for a few years. I left all his 4link brackets on and maybe next summer ill link the rear.

I also added the overloads that I cut down to the rear. the overloads and the extra diameter from the diamond housing brought the truck up and it sits close to level now. Im going to wheel it for a while and see if the front settles down. I still plan on removing the overloads and lowering the front. it just sits way to high for me.

thanks Tim for the extra hand he even wore his toyota mechanic shirt so it looked official

I fired the truck up for the first time today and ran it through the gears to make sure the duals were set up and not giving me any issues. I do have a problem I have twin sticks on the rear case and when I shift it into 4wd it goes into 4wd my light comes on but if you hit the 4wd shifter it will pop back into 2wd. I know on the trail the first rock I hit will put me back in 2wd.

anyone have any ideas before I pull it all apart. the 4wd shifter hardly feels like it shifts back at all.

the only thing i can think of is that you didnt cut the shift rail enough so its hitting the adapter and not engaging all the way
