Body Lift or all suspension??
« on: Dec 29, 2008, 10:53:18 PM »
Runnin 5 inch long travel All Pro's with 5.5 inch shackles and 33/12.50's on the road...its a daily driver/crawler. Have a spare set of steelies and lookin to mount somethin larger for the weekend wheelin trips. I fit 35/12.50s but see alot of guys runnin 37 MTRS on the trail, is a body lift the way to go or even very desirable?

I'm towering over 37s right now with 6" springs.  I'll be taking the body lift off and going with 5" springs pretty soon but keeping the 37s.

Im not a big fan of body lifts either...couldnt get my hands on any 37's for a test fit and have to make a decision before I weld on the rock sliders and get a front bumper

If you are going to jump between 33's and 37's you need to get a couple thirds(front and rear) to hold the gearing for each size tire..Or pick a gear that works with one size great and the other it's Crap, or one ratio that sucks for both tire sizes.   :dunno:   The choice is your's.

I think the most important thing to remember is the legal end of things, like frame height. If they really want to push the issue you could get cited for being too high. I run a 2 inch bodylift, doesn't make a bit of difference in feel. I wouldn't go any more than that though since things don't work out well with the wires, lines and such beyond 2".

I just thought I would point out the gear issue, but yes the law has a say too. He may be legal on the 33's and over height on the 37's. Also the 37's with make him more top heavy..

I like to split the lift between body and Suspension, a 2" on the body and 4" on the suspension make a total of 6".  I have only lifted the frame 4" but get 6" for tire clearance, and 2" clearance in the drive train tunnel which means I can now Tuck it up 1 1/2 to 2" to add clearance under the cases and transmission.

Thirds have 5.29's with detroits, dual cases are next in line after bumpers. I have plenty of clearance in the front to tuck larger tires but the wheels wells in my '85s bed look like they might have a little trouble with 37's

Sounds like some trimming is called for.   If you want to add a couple more inches I would not jack the suspention up any more.  I would use Body lift...2" would be max. Maybe drop the Suspention down 1 and add the BL for 6".

But trimming is maybe the best option.
