My new Piggy
« on: Dec 01, 2008, 10:59:38 AM »
Well I just picked this 1978 FJ55. All stock ex-sheriff snow plow vehicle from eastern Sierra Nevada side. Rust is very very minimal limited to the front fenders (will probably only need about a 3x3 patch) and light surface in a few spots were the light bar touched.

Plan is to slowly restore as a travel/expedition vehicle. I plan to keep the 2F, Shackle reverse the front with OME, 2-1/2" rear alcan leafs, 33x10.5s on the stock wheels, FJ60 PS box conversion and install and H55F with split case. I also have a late model FJ40 rear axle with a single wheel cyl and e-brake that will go in the same time as the 5spd.

Smog is the first order of business. The smog pump feels rough and the belt was not on. The vehicle was being stored in a yard with wire eating dog, so the wires to the tail lights are dead. The Cruiser was flat towed from San Jose to me and after I checked it out the rear PTO cover has about a 1" hole. Probably the nut came loose. Hopefully the case is not toasted. I notice a heavy whine when I drove it down the drive way. If I can talk my bro out of his H41 transmission then that will replace the H42 and I'll freshen up whats left of the T-case.

Nothing, I lucked out! The rain gutters are in excellent shape. Since this was a sheriff vehicle it may have sent time cover up. Check out the last pic showing the rear seat. On the drive side floor you can see what I believe to be the leg restraint loops.

Well I think I'm going to going to pull the Trans and t-case out and do a rebuild first. I want to get a DMV moving permit and start driving this thing. I need to dig through my cruiser junk and see if I have a good 3spd (2.31:1) gear set I can through into the 4sdp (1.96:1) case. I'll get some picks of the hole in the rear cover this weekend and of the nasty oily grease ball that is suppose to be the trans/t-case. I feel comfortable rebuilding the 3spd/4spd cases, I have not done one in a few years so I'm actually looking forward to the job. I have never rebuilt a H42 transmission so that's going to be fun.

I need to make room in my garage first, I post a pic of that project.

I think I have a 3speed case if you need one. I didn't open it up, but I'm gonna guess the gears aren't in the best shape. its been collecting dust in Hanford for 4 years. I wont miss it.

Hey Dave

I have a h42 and split case out of a fj60 I am parting out.  Would be a great upgrade.  I have driven it around the block and it shifts good.  Dont know anything else about it.  If you are interested, maybe we can work something out.

Thanks for the offer but I just pick up a few 3 spd cases last week. Upon first inspection I think I have at least one good gear set to use.

How ever.......

I'm interested now. Does this unit have the 3.5" empty housing (5spd gear housing) between the trans and t-case? That would be sweet if I could fit the longer 4spd in now, cut the drive shafts and modify everything. The H55F would then be a Saturday morning install. Either way your right its a great up grade and I could probably get away with out a rebuild of any sort. Let me know. I'll send you a PM.

I got a late model H42/Split Case setup tonight. I got a call at 4:30 from Georg wanting to know if I still wanted the split case from megolfer and in the coarse of the conversation I told him of my plans on the wagon. I was shock when he set me up with this. Simon was on his way to Fresno so I picked it up tonight.

This late model unit has the 3.5" spacer which make the H42 (4spd) the same length as the H55F (5spd). So now I'll do drive shafts, floor mods and what ever is necessary to install it. Then when the cash flow increases I'll pick up a H55 and bolt it in. I'm not sure if I'll do a rebuild on it or just reseal the units. I guess when I get them apart I can see the true condition.

This up coming weekend I'll have some free time and I going to pull the side and rear PTO covers off the current t-case and see whats up. If the gears look good then I seal it up, change the rear cover, fill it with oil and take it for a little drive. I also have started noticing a squeal which I believe is from the alternator. I need to check that out.
