small chip in ring gear
« on: Nov 28, 2008, 07:16:28 PM »
i was wondering if it would be OK to keep running this ring and pinion. One of the teeth of the ring gear has a small chip on the outer part. The best i can explain it is, the outer corner of the ring tooth is missing. I dont really have the time to have a new ring and pinion installed, kinda need this 4wd soon. The truck will only be in 4wd very very little. Shouldnt be in any big bind(only mud), and it wont stay in 4wd for any long distance at all. Any opinions?

If the chip is outside where the teeth mesh you should be fine.

I'd smooth it out with a dremel so there's no possibility of a crack propagating and getting another chip....

I dont see a problem with it if your not crawling on it, just file it down, but its hard to say without a picture...

thats the best pic i could get of it. Found another small chip on the pinion. Starting to think id be better off waiting on new gears than spending the time putting this chunk back in and having it break. this goes in the front end by the way.
