Another Wisconsin Newbie
« on: Aug 26, 2004, 09:05:52 AM »
Building my first project on my first and only vechicle. Is an 88 4Runner. I've been doing little things here and there to make it a 4wheeler and a daily driver. I made a couple of custom upgrades. I just put the custom SAS in it. Now I am working out all of the bugs.

Here is what she gots.
-Custom nerf bars and rap around rear bumper
-5.29 gears
-Lock Right in the front and eletric locker in the rear
-SAS with a 85 axel
-3" blocks in the rear
-Custom rear and front shackles
-33" BFG's on old steel rims
-Rancho shocks
-Custom U-bolt flip plates and bolts
-2" cherry bomb muffler
-Hyster kit
-Waag brush guard

Updated pics to come.

Here are 2 updated pics. I took it out for the second time today and broke a birfield joint about a half an hour into the trails. I broke it pulling a darn ford explorer out of a hole I easily made it through. That is the last time I do something like that again. I didn't even get to play. Now I have to buy another one and after I just bought an new clutch, transmision rebuild kit, and 2 new shocks for the rear. I guess you have to pay to play.

Here are 2 moree pics. Yeah that was a real bummer with the birf. It came up from New Mexico rust free. I spent most of the summer cleaning it up. The paint was oxidized and the interior was really dirty. I spent many hours working on it. I painted everything for the front axle and tarred the fender wells to prevent rust from the Wisconsin salt. I still have many other things to do to it in the future.

Yea I was going to ask how you had no rust on it, I lived in Milwaukee for 2 years in the 80's brought my pristine 70 Pontiac Firebird Formula 455 SD and it started rusting after the first winter. :rivers:  I quickly sold it to a guy in Hales Corners and he was going to fix the minor rust. (he said he was going to hide it in the winter)

One of the only bad things about Wisconsin is the salt in the winter time. I hope it is not to bad. I am going to try hard to prevent it from rusting. I put roofing tar in the fender wells, tail gate, inside on the fender wells and every where there where seems and where they rusted. It worked for my dad for years on one of his trucks. I want to move down south later in life where vehicles don't rust.
We found a birf at a junk yard for $40. I'll probably put it in this weekend

When I first moved there I worked for Rusty Jones for a while, didn't work to good on my bird. They told me it was because it was not originally treated when it was new. I think that salt is super salt and will rust anything it touches reguardless of what it is treated with.
