i have to regear my front diff to 4.56 to match the rear in my 79 pickup. I've got a 3rd off an 88 rear axle that i plan to use. it's go over 200k on it and the spiders are shot. should i just throw them away and install an aussie locker ?

OK got a few parts in.. now i just got to figure out what to do with them. first problem might be figuring out how to set up the pinion depth.

yeah, thanks, I'll look into whats in gearinstalls. already have something that's a little strange. side bearings came off too easy i think. put a wrench on a puller and it slid right off by hand after one little twist. with the new bearing i can push it on tight by hand with just a little turn. it's not loose but i can seat it without a driver. should i just keep going and not worry?

Typical for toys. Not supposed to be loose. Gearinstall page list a bearing sealer (don't quote me) that's like locktite made for this stuff. Otherwise, new carrier.

yeah i think your right, i saw that install also. think it was called high strength sleeve retainer from loctite. I'll try to find some and use it. I'm waiting for a new cross shaft form Toyota before i can do anymore.

it's grooved .005 right where it well come in contact with the locker. clearance is good @ .010. new shaft is only $21.00. so for peace of mind I'll replace it.

I've heard from Gearman on Pirate that you should not use the green sleeve retainer. Here's a link to the thread.

thanks.. I'll look into it, i'm not going to freak out too much because it's in the front. i couldn't find any spec's on the carrier bearing surface od. but i compared it to an old rusted carrier i had laying around and it looks like less than .001 wear. i could use the old carrier, but it came out of a really old diff and looks lighter and weaker than the newer one.

checked with Toyota $350.00 for a new carrier. so i found a 86 or newer 3rd in a scrap pile and removed the carrier. cleaned it up and removed the old bearings. bearing surface looked good. new bearings pressed on tight.

Its a good idea to make yourself a set-up bearing, saves alot of hassle when setting pinion depth. Set-up bearing is a bearing with the I.D. opened up so it slides on the pinion. This allows you to change shims easily, instead of pulling the bearing every time which possibly can damage them. Just buy an extra timkin and open it up with a barrel sander till it slides onto the pinion. After your depth is good then press the un-opened up bearing onto the pinion with the shims.

As far as cross-shaft, keep one in your spare parts, when using a lunch-box locker. I have seen several break.

thanks I'll look into finding a pinion bearing for a tool. the old pinion shim i removed from this unit was a .086. i was going to make a tool out of an old koyo pinion bearing from a 79-81 but it only has 12 rollers and the new one has 14.

Typically the bearing will still be exactly then same, minus the rollers. The dimensions are standard between manufacturers. For added insurance, get the one thats the same. good luck !

i checked and the old bearing was the same height as the new, so i honed it out so it would slide on and off the pinion shaft. run out less than .002, set the back lash at .006 and checked the pattern.. battery died in my camera before i could take a shot of the other side of the ring gear. got to look at the book before i decide to change a shim or leave it alone. i think on the front diff the coast side is the most important.. what do you all think?

OK here's the other side. looks like the pinion is too close...

maybe.. .084 or .086 shim in now. could change it with the spare .077 shim i also have.

remove -084 shim and installed .077 shim. better i think. coast side.. this well be driving the front axle. looks like it should work to me. what do you think?

You do know that your rear end on your 79 is a 4.36 ratio, not a 4.56.

yes.. when it was new in 1979. but it was changed to 4.11 by someone before i got it. i just put in an axle from a 92 truck that had an auto and 4.56 gearing. so now I'm changing the front.

OK i finally got back to it. putting the Toyota solid spacer in was kind of a pain. bad times hit the business i was working at, so i had to find another press. i lost the old crush sleeve, so i couldn't measure it. instead i installed the solid spacer with to many shims and measured the end play. the removed .004 past zero preload and checked. to light, so i pulled it apart again, ended up with .007 past zero preload to give it the right pinion bearing preload.

yeah that place is done and I'll looking for another place to wrench. I'm in the middle of a move, then I'll install this front diff. can't wait to see if it improves the 4x4 on the muddy logging roads around here.

OK been working and to much work!

Finally found time to work on truck, been driving it every day. drained the old 3rd and then removed axles. the seal was out on one side and tried to pour 80/90 on the ground!!! removed old and installed 4.56 aussie 3rd member.

Filled with lube, greased, assembled and tested.
