stripped steering box splines?
« on: Oct 19, 2008, 10:30:12 PM »
Ok i was out wheelin Sunday and i blew the high presure line on the box so i was limping a tempory fix which left me with basicly no power steering. At the end of the trail i would turn the steering wheel but it would just click and spin without the wheels moving, it got soo bad i couldn't make a simple turn without the wheel clicking. We think it's the splines on the box where the shaft hooks up but not 100% sure as it was pitch black.

It's not a broken birf because i had one and we replaced it, i really hope it's not the colum cause i don't have a spare one of those.....a box i do. Oh and the truck is in the woods still so i need to get it out Tomorrow (monday) Just wondering if anyone had a similar problem and could point me in the right direction.

Look at the shaft between the steering wheel & box. You may have sheared the pins in the connection on the shaft.

thinkin now its the  splines on the steering wheel itself that stripped.......if so can i just pop a new one on? Like does the plastic splines on the wheel mate to a steel shaft?

Where in the woods is it? :gap:

Sound strange, might be the box itself that is doing that.

Did you find what it was? Rag joint pins (bolts) sheared or was the box bad?
