I came into work this morning, fixed my bagel, made my cup of coffee, and got to editing (workin). About 15 mins into workin, I glance at my coffee cup and see brown specks on it... Must be crumbs from my bagel, I'm thinkin.

Well, a few minutes later, I see the specks have gotten bigger.....

Yes, my cup was very slowly oozing coffee out the side and the bottom. I did not microwave it, I took it straight from the stack of new cups....

My coworker and I had a few laughs over it, and I figured I would post it here and share. Maybe just poorly compressed foam I'm assuming

That's what I was thinking, but I took the cup out of a stack of brand new cups

they could have pulled it out. poked a few holes, and then put it back in the bag a few cups deep like nothing ever happened.

Not to sound like a tree hugger, but I'm constantly surprised that so many people and companies who claim to be going green or looking out for the environment still use the dreaded styrofoam cup!

I hear ya! I actually heard that restaurants are now required NOT to use styrofoam anymore!

But our company isn't effected....

Not for the previously mentioned reason, but I personally just hate throw away cups of any type and keep a coffee mug and small thermos at work, but it's more of a cocoa mug than coffee mug

Did you get another cup? what happened to that one. The crushing thing makes sense, but would most likely affect more than one cup in the stack.

Ummmm I threw it away after I finished my coffee.... The cup was in the middle of a stack. And you're right, if it had been crushed, it would have been visibly obvious, especially being in the middle of a stack.

Styrofoam is just a bunch of balls pressed together. Sometimes they don't bond completely thus they leak. I've had it happen many times.

Of course you have, I should have known

I've used several cups a day for the past 2 years and haven't ever seen it... just thought it was interesting that's all.

Now that I think of it, I think I'll take Rs's approach and get my own cup... that's a lot of foam

I meant, did it leak as well? It wouldn't necessarily be a noticable crush, if it was just pressed in, but it would affect other cups.

Not that I give a rats about the foam making its way into a landfill etc etc but I'd use my own cup anyway. Most foam cups are too damned small and don't hold the temp as well as a good insulated stainless cup does.
