Topic: 86+ rear axle housing

i understand that the 86 and up axle housings are wider than my 84. i am interested in doing the wider conversion and am wondering how far in years can i go in housings and what exactly i will need to pull it off? meaning can i keep my same 3rd and do i need the wider axles from the new housing?

only if it had the G axle code,  and even then you will have to weld on new perches

oh ok so when i do the swap no matter what new perches will have to be welded whether its a 4wd or 2wd housing?

No, 4wd, 86-95 rear housings have perches in the exact same spot as pre-86 housings.  If you find a truck with that, you should be able to bolt it right up.  Get everything you can with it,  drum to drum, including axles, brakes lines, e brake cable, and so on.  If the brake cable is not with it, you will just have to extend yours a bit.  That is all.  Oh and yes you can bolt up the 3rd you currently have.

90-95 4Runner rear axles had coil springs so they aren't a direct swap.

yep, the 90-95 runner shafts will fit into the 86-95 housings, just wont have a working e brake

I thought that when toy whent to thrd gen the springs moved out borad a bit.
if so you'd have to get a set-up from 86-88? not positve butt I'm sure if I'm wrong some one here will  me.

Nope, springs are in the same location.  I put an axle from a 92 under my 85.

Does a multi-pattern flange have to be used when you stick a 90 rear end under an 85? Or will it work with the drivelines and all?

I think the pattern changed in 84 and again in 95, but I could be wrong.  Either way, it would not be hard to redrill the right pattern on the flange you have.

I very easily drilled the flange on my first gen when I switched to a 2nd gen 3rd.  Just be very careful not to pop through the other side
