Internet Connection Speed Poll
« on: Nov 16, 2002, 06:21:25 AM »
I really need a faster connection.

Back in the days I could leave the board for two days and come back to read 5 or 6 messages.

Now Ive got to read 20 or 30 messages.

Anyways, I am in the market for a Cable hookup, so soooooonnnnnnnnn......... .. . . . .  .

RedNeck...
First thing you chould do is can AOL.  Then see if you can get broadband service in your area. After that, most DSL/Cable plans run anywhere from $40-60 for basic service. Basic meaning 1-4 static IPs or a DHCP allocated IP. Shoot for the static IP if you can. It gives you a live address on the net and will allow you to host a site and/or connect to your home computer from anywhere. Also, might look into a DSL/cable router if you want more than one computer to access the internet from your home. Good Luck.

i have a comp at home but it's not connected.

it's hard for me to justify getting linked at home when my work sets me up with a faster comp and a T1 link.

My 56k dialup connected at actual speeds of 48-50k.  Very acceptable, IMO.

but the cable modem I run now is MUCH nicer!!  (I actually spend time online at home now....speed makes it useable!!)

Went from 56k modem to Roadrunner cable a few months ago. As long as you don't have to rely on them for tech support it rocks! About $42/month.

So it looks like more people are using Cable than DSL. I thought this would be the case. The reason I started this poll is because I am kinda-sorta in the market for a faster connection.

Running PacBell/SBC DSL and love it. $49.95/mo. Just ran speed tests and got 1,190kbps download and 134kbps upload speed. Not bad. Also running a wireless 802.11b inside the house. That's a good solution and provides a hardware firewall to boot.

BigMike, You know I always use a t1....

56K - Current FCC regs state a max of 54 kbps. However Standard modems are dependent on a phone line and the quality of that line determines your connection speed. Phone line age has a lot to do with it too.

DSL - Fast, but it is also dependent on those same phone lines so that 128 or 256 may not be reached. It also takes 3-4weeks to get it installed.

Cable - Fast, pretty quick install, BUT if you're in a nieghborhood where there are a lot of cable users you can count on  pretty Boggy time due to the fact that cable cant take ll the use without dropping speed.

Satellite - $$$ Great but expensive and weather will screw it up. Provided mostly by current Sat TV companies.

T series - Yet again $$$ But This is where speeds go from Kilo to Mega (Kbps to Mbps) and the higher the # after the T the faster.

                              Time For My Fav.

Wireless Broadband -  He He thats most of what I used to install, Not near as pricey as The T's or Sat. we advertised it at 1.5Meg scalable to 5.5Meg however We can go as slow as 256Kbps to as fast as 155Mbps Nothing can screw up your speed they are set and controlled individually By the use of the NIC's MAC address. It uses radio antenna's to provide service....
It delivers T1 like service at a fraction of the cost.

Oh and remember unless you pay for it you wont get the same speeds up and down...

Hey yodaman I dont know if what your hearing is all the true. Satellite connections have quite a bit a variances depending on what type of download speeds you contract for. Sure if you want to pay out the wazzu you can get high speeds, but in my opinion copper is the better way to go. Less likely to have outages and easier to troubleshoot. I've installed both and have had to deal with supporting both. Of course hang on to your laptops, intel is spending a lot of money to blanket metro areas with high bandwidth wireless based on 802.11a-b called "hotspots". They are going to deploy it in march of this year for palm tops. They are trying to integrate a new chip utilizing wireless broadband. Which will suck for all the other unlicensed ISPs out there.  :thud:

Wow! seems like for DSL you guys are getting RIPPED!! :puke:

I have DSL & just checked my speeds:
494kbps download
107kbps upload

I have reached 1800kbps download before, though...

All for just $39.95/mo
My ISP also offers a 256kbps version of DSL for only $29.95/mo

Roadrunner thru Time Warner cable costs $39.95/mo out here. I had to go DSL cause I cant get cable, have to have satelite TV.

As to satelite, (at least TV), I have had no problems with weather, except once in a while a STRONG lightning storm will mess it up, but then again, WTF are you doing with the TV/comp on during a lightning storm ANYWAY!?!?!
The snow and rain has had NO effect on my service, EVER! Even with 6" of snow on the dish...

I had to go DSL cause I cant get cable, have to have satelite TV.

Same with me. They've got a 21.95/month special for Cable in my neighborhood, but you've got to have Cable TV as well. Satelite is much better, but damn I really want cable internet!!

choices, choices, choices
