I noticed a leak on my front axle so now its time to start planning for a rebuild.
I´m thinking this is as good of a time as any to beef it up, since I´ll have it apart anyway.
When looking at the axle parts selection Marlin has on his site I thought to myself, "thingy it, I´ll buy the whole works for this axle."
But thats lot of dough, so maybe I don´t need every little thing.
The future plans are for 38-39.5" tires on 14x15" wheels often turning at very low pressures, crawlbox and ram assist steering to name a few things. I´m just getting things like axles, motor and body sorted out before I get the tires, fenderflares and other big investments. Then I´ll buy longfields when my birfs decide to give up.
I´m looking at the MC-12006 (Knuckle kit w. wheel bearings) at $165 as a good starting point. I´m changing the wheelbearings now because these old ones won´t last long with the 14x15 wheels.
I´m going with HD axle seals for the piece of mind and because they´re not very expensive.
I am thinking about changing out the knuckle studs because I´m not sure how the old ones will react to 38s and ram assist steering. Should I buy them from Marlin or get ARP studs? Is it enough to change the 8 top studs or should I get all 16, both top and bottom studs?
Should I get new snap rings for the inner axles and birfs, or just use the old ones?
Those brass axle bushing, do I need those or what?
What would you buy?
This is for a ´90 SFA diesel Hilux, but I think the axle is the same as the ´85 axle. It has vented rotors, Aisin hubs and an 8" ring gear.
