THE BLUE MARLIN aka 1980 project build up by Maxwe001
« on: Aug 03, 2008, 08:32:55 PM »
I bought this truck for $700.00 from a guy up the road it is a 1980 toyota pickup
the clutch was bad in it and it didnt have a right rear back glass so I put a clutch in it and put the back glass in and then I drove it for a little while and was told that my brake light and reverse lights dont work so I got my trusty test light out and started with the light bulb and they were good and then I worked my way back to the main source
I found no bad spots so I had a buddy of mine help me look at it and he said he isnt gona touch it cause there was to much of a fire hazard so I began to look on the MARLIN CRAWLER FORUM for a 1st gen wire harness I was lucky that Glen aka 79coyotefrg
had a 1983 harness I bought it and I am having to swap over all my pigtails (twist and solder glen I know) to keep me from  having to cut and solder a million wires I bought a combo switch from Collier aka DTB it is a plug and play :psss: we like stuff like that dont we dtb. but I still must swap my ends over on some things so I can plug them into my a/c and heater box and into my motor stuff I saw the chance to buy a marlin lift kit I did this and it has been delivered all I have is a camera on my cell phone so if the pict look kinda crapy its a cell phone cam I will begin to post pict as soon as I get some from my phone to the pc for all of thoes that wanted me to start a thred on this here ya go

YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

I am gonna pull it out  of the garage after I got through with my 8 hours of daily "W" word but i will give you a heads up on what I have done so far so the pictures will go and and hand.

first I took the front crossmember out of the box and I put the front springs and the bushings in them along with the back front bushings its just mocked up into place that way i can look at everything and have a good idea of how it is going to fit up and I can tell my welder guy to burn the metal to metal. then I began to put the rear springs and bushings together ADD LOTS AND LOTS OF GREASE ITS BETTER TO DO IT NOW THAN FORGET ABOUT IT LATER HAND HAVE SQUEEKY SPRINGS AND BUSHINGS THAT GO OUT PREMATURITLY .as you can see I went ahead and put the rear leaf springer hanger and the frame mount onto the spring I did this so that i would have a good idea of what it will look like and to make sure I put it on the correct end of the spring.  :turtle: MARLIN CRAWLER supplies instructions  :hammerhead: for a reason ALWAYS PUT THE MILATARY WRAP END TO THE FRONT OF THE TRUCK LIKE IT SAYS IN THE INSTRUCTIONS. I then was able to get me some sweet deals on some half doors and also on some tube doors $75.00 for both sets he was asking $50.00 for each but I told him id take both of them for $75.00 he said OK its a deal. so I SKIPPED work all day yesterday and yesterday afternoon I drove to Birmingham about 45 min north of here and met with the guy that had the doors. I believe some slight modification will be needed for the tube doors and I know i need to finish welding up the half doors they do not have any kind of sheet metal covering them to keep me from cutting my legs  I will get Pict today I swear it.

update: my :eye: is ok and I am going ot get back at it as soon as I get off work  I got the passenger side spring down but the drivers side is a little tougher cause of the way that the exhaust is run but I am thin king of either cutting the exhaust (dont wana do that ) or trying to pry it out of my way just enough to get a air socket on it and then put the air to it but then I will have the SAME problem when I reinstall it so I might just cut it ???  any thoughts on what to do ?

if you have/can weld just cut it. i ran for a while w/o a cat or muffler. it was extremely loud, especially without doors, it would set off every low rider's alarm too  :gap: but its not a huge deal.

I also played with the torch a little and cut off the stock bump stops and also the old stock shock towers I will get some pix of that as  soon as I can I will be busey tonight with a High School Football Game  but Sat and Sun I will be free. with a fully charged phone

In this picture you can see that I have cut off the old bumpstop  but Ihave not grinded it down smooth

In this picture you can see the Old shock mount after I have cut it off I havent goten to close to the frame untill now I used the troch to get as close as I could with out cutting a hole in the frame.

this is the drivers side bumpstop after i cut it and before I grinded it smooth

dirvers side before I grinded it smooth

this is where i had to cut the exhaust to clear the stupid bolt :shake_head:

this is a pict of the exhaust (in case you have never seen one)

this is a picture of the passenger side bumpstop after I grinded it down smooth

this is a picture of the passenger side  old shock tower after I have grinded it down smooth

passenger side bumpstop grinded down smooth

drivers side top after I grinded it smooth

passenger side grinded smooth and painted to keep it from rusting

passengers side old bumpstop painted to keep it from rusting

passengers side old shock tower area painted to keep it from rusting

:sad2:  Oh the sweet bitter end I have no Oxygen  I cant go any further with the torch cause i dont have anyone in the local area that has any mind to open up on a saturday morning and sell oxygen

more updates

1st. I finaly got a buddy of mine to come over and help me I put his :moon: to work with a torch cutting some off of the front axle. then I made his :moon: grind down what he had cut as you can see from the pictures.

after all that grinding I told him we could hang the front springs through the frame

I was hopeing that we could have gotten a chance to put the front crossmember up and have it clampted into place however we didnt cause we have not cut the stock old leaf spring mounting place loose on the front. we will try to get this done asap maybe we can cut them off on Wed. of this week  :dunno:
