2000 Tundra vibrations/noise
« on: Jul 23, 2008, 08:48:25 PM »
My mom drives a 2000 extended cab Tundra. It haa been making some bad noises for a while now. It sounds/feels like a driveline vibration coming from the front axle area. Do the tundra t-cases stay locked in 4wd all the time? If they do, then that means the front driveshaft is spinning all the time and that could potentially be my problem if the driveshaft has a bad joint. If they do not stay in 4wd full time, then I also had another idea.

When the truck is moved from reverse to drive after sitting with the parking brake on it feels like the brakes stick, then release. My other thought was something is up with the e-brake setup that is causing it to stick and also vibrate when driving the truck. I figure that a parking brake vibration might sound similar to the noise I described above.

What do you guys think? Thanks in advance for any replies.

The transfer case does not turn in 2wd so I don't think thats it. Have your back drive shaft checked out seen some that needed to replace (in later model extended cab trucks even after sending the shaft to be repaired) also check to see if you have a leaking axle seal. Also check the slip yoke on the driveshaft that will cause it to feel like the brakes are sticking.

This will sound stupid, but disconnect the battery over night and see if anything changes.  My Tundra was acting like something in the brakes was sticking (pull up to a stop and it would jerk when the brakes were released) and the service tech said that the transmission's "brain" could learn to be rough and disconnecting the battery could reset things.  He also lubricated the slip joint in the rear driveshaft and said that can cause a similar problem.  Between the two my problem was solved.  I doubt it will solve everything you described, but give it a try and see if you can eliminate anything from the list.

Not stupid at all he's right the vehicle will learn how you drive and will get use to it and if thats the problem then the battery cable could take care of it.

The transfer case does not stay locked in 2WD.  However, the driveline is still spinning.  Has your mom had any brake vibrations while driving/braking?  The early 1gen tundras had a TSB that fixed brake vibrations.

Ok. We took it to a shop, the guy says driveline/u-joint and sticking brakes. Hopefully he will not rape my mom on prices.

Do you have a link to the TSB by any chance? I would really like to see it.

The tsb he is talking about is were we but on bigger caliphers and backing plates and in the process replaced the front wheel bearings only due to the backing plates. Also the only turning in the front is the axles the front drive shaft is still. the tsb # is BR004-02

Ok, thanks guys. I called down to the shop and it turns out the carrier bearing was toast (I didn't even look at it, my mom gave me no chance to... she just drove it down to the repair man and told me to come pick her up). Also some ther things, i will update when I see the invoice or whatever.

Ok, they replaced the carrier bearing friday. The noise was still there. We took it back to the shop. The shop decided it was a transfercase issue (???) so they sent it to a different shop. We will see how this pans out. I am thinking its going to be very expensive.

Ok, sorry for the late update. Turns out it was not the transfer case. What had happened is the pin going through the carrier came out and was hitting all around in the axle and sometimes jamming not allowing the axle to move which resulted in a pop, kind of like brakes popping. It has torn up enough stuff that the shop just ordered a whole new already setup 3rd from toyota. Problem solved. $1600. :yikes: We only had to pay $25 because we have an extended powertrain warrantee on it. :woohoo:
