REAR SHACKLE MOUNT
« on: Jul 07, 2008, 12:25:15 PM »
So I am wondering if anybody has relocatedl their rear shackle mount on their 4 runners like the formula toy's in the pic?
The reason that I am wondering is I just ordered some Pivot Blocks and will gain 1.5" of lift from these. I don't want any more lift. My runner is Bobbed 10" and so my frame is cut already and my body mounts are re-located.
I feel that this is doable unless there is some unforseen complication with this idea?
Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the pic Mini, do you think that i'll have any problems mounting the shackle hanger at the very back of the frame, on the outside face? I see it done on the formula toy's and trucks a lot, but I haven't seen it done on a 4runner.

Just make sure your angle is right.

I closed in the back of my frame with a piece of .095 tubing.

You can mount it on the back.  It might not be that simple though.  You would probably have to shorten your frame more because you already have your shackle mount set up under your frame.  If you added mounts to the back how it is, you might not even be able to get the shackle to bolt to the spring and mount, and if you could, your angle might be bad.  Some good things about mounting it on the back of the frame instead of under:
1.  It will lower your 4Runner down a bit.
2.  It eliminates the possibility of inverting your shackles on the trail, if you set it up right.
3.  It is unique, and therefore cooler.

On our Formula Toy we've got the mount on top of the frame and the shackle curves around the frame.  Sort of like a "C".
Relentless

Ya I planned on removing the stock rear x member, cutting the frame shorter, and mounting the rear hangers on some 1/4" wall channel that will replace the integrity of the frame. This plan hopefully will work out well also, because right now my tailgate hits my frame and I can't lower it down all the way. So if I cut the frame more, hopefully the tailgate fully clears it.

1/4" will be overkill, you can do 3/16" and save some weight without sacrificing strength.

With the increasing price of steel, I will take your advice Mini and go 3/16.
