22re problems
« on: Jun 26, 2008, 11:21:47 PM »
i just got done rebuilding and installing my 22re in to my 92' pickup. i hooked up all of the wiring harness and copied another injected pickups vacuum hoses although they all kind of bent in the same direction anyways. i hooked up the air box with the mass airflow sensor and the tps. i made sure to set my distributor right and got the firing order 100 percent right. threw good fuel in the tank. hooked my injectors up correctly. throttle is all hooked up. so i figured i would try firing it up. within a couple of seconds it fired up. my problem now is that when i start it the idle is like throbbing. it revs up to like 3500 then drops to like 1000 repetitively. when i go to give it more throttle it does nothing. when i disconnect the mass airflow it will die. when i disconnect the tps it stops pulsing and instantly begins revving up to the point where i shut it off to avoid blowing up the freshly built motor. any ideas? it was nice having it start right up but now I'm confused wtf is going on.

Sounds like the time when my friends TPS went out on his car. I don't know if it is the TPS because I have never had a TPS problem on a 22re, but it might be a place to start. I am sure the FSM probably has ways to check it and stuff. Check out the FSM and see if it tells you how to test it.

Might not be the problem, but I had the same problem on my 89 22re when I had it.  The engine would rev to about 3K and then all of a sudden die down to where it would catch again at around 800...then do everything again.  Turned out I had mistakenly put one of the vacuum lines on wrong.  Mine was in the back and it connected to the brass colored part near the fire wall (sorry, I completely forgot what the part is called).  Start it and then go back to the firewall (it is the part that comes off of the intake and looks like an exhaust part) and begin to unplug vacuum lines.  If I unplugged mine it all of a sudden ran perfectly fine.  Sorry for being so vague, I just can't remember what that part is called.

disconnect the throttle position sensor and if it runs fine it's the TPS
