14 MPG? Is that right?
« on: Jun 22, 2008, 03:28:49 PM »
Im looking at a 94 extra cab with the 3.0 v6, he is saying that it gets 14 MPG  :yikes:! Is this right? What could be causing this? It has 35" tires but come on. I was expecting like 18. It has 157,000 miles.

I have gotten as low as 11 with my 4 cyl, so I don't see why 14 would be such a shock.

Hmm. Hmm. Maybe with a tuneup +02's and a new cat might help.

I just called my friend that has a 3.0 in his 4runner (auto transmission too), and he never gets any better that 12-14 mpg on 31s. So, 14 mpg with 35s is not out of the question. Plus, mpg has a lot to do with driving style, so maybe he drives that truck like a raped ape and therefore gets terrible milage.

Auto or manual?  Is it geared right for 35"s?  I've got a '91 xcab with a 3.0 (240K or so) 5 speed, 5.29s, and 35" tires, plus sliders, spare in the bed, full toolbox, etc. and I get 17-18 consistently.  I don't drive like a granny, nor do I drive like I stole it either (only on the rocks  :hammer:

I'd say a tuneup may be in the works, or even ask him if he's ever really calculated it.   I hit my trip meter every time I fill up, and then the next time I fuel up, divide the amount of miles by the fuel I just put it.  Not 100% accurate, but good enough for me.

There's your biggest problem.  Without the right gears, truck has to work a lot harder to turn those bigger tires.

If it's not geared that his speedometer is off which means his odometer is off which means you can't acurately calculate mpg with the thing anyways.

The only way to partially acurately measure mpg in that thing would be with a gps.

If it helps you, he's probably getting better than he thinks.
