Horn Works Then Doesn't Work
« on: Jun 08, 2008, 06:58:14 AM »
After around 100,000 miles the horn on my 91 pickup quit working. I checked all the fuses and they were fine. Then I replaced the clutch and the horn worked for a while. Now it does not work any more (without having made any adjustments).

Has anyone figured out this problem? My brother has an 87, and he has similar problems with the horn on his truck.

Check ground contacts in the wheel itself

Try honking the horn with the wheel in different positions. Usually after years and years of turning the contact surface on the back of the wheel wears through or the tip of the spring loaded contact wears down and it doesn't contact anymore. (test that by pushing on the top of the wheel toward the dash and push the horn button)

Thanks very much for the replies. I tried turning the wheel all the way to the left and pressing the horn, and no sound. The all the way to the right, nothing. Then I tried pushing it toward the dashboard, nothing. Pulling it away from the dash did nothing as well.

I guess it could still be something to do with the contacts in the wheel but it seems unlikely.

I mentioned that the horn worked after doing a clutch job because that seemed very odd to me. The horn had not worked for about 5 years previously so I thought there might be a connection (though I can't imagine what it would be).

Is there something somewhere else other than the wheel that could be causing the problem?

Take your steering wheel off and clean the contacts and try that could have corrosion on them also the plate could be worn out
