gauge swap
« on: May 30, 2008, 08:50:36 PM »
I just got a instrument panel from an 81 toyota pickup with a tach. Will it just plug in to my 81 pickup that has no tach? It has a space for one , but I thought it might be easier to swap the whole cluster. Has anyone done this? Rusty

It should, if it has an OP gauge make sure you change the sender on the engine. I do not know about the 81 but on my 90 all the wiring was already there.

Then make sure you swap out the sender on the block. The idiot light sender will burn up the gauge the first time you turn the key on. If you do not have the OP gauge sender just leave it unhooked at the block until you can get the proper sender.

Both gauge clusters have idiot lights for oil pressure. They look identical except one has a tach in the middle instead of a blank space.

I picked up one that fits in the console in front of the shifter. Have not had a chance to mount it yet.
