Time for a new flywheel?
« on: May 13, 2008, 05:23:23 AM »
well a while ago i got a ceramic clutch from marlin and in the process, i got the flywheel resurfaced. i'm not sure the guy did it correctly because i told him to do the step up but when i got it back, it didn't seem to have much of one. i was also told that ceramic clutches "eat up" flywheels by a fairly reliable source. so heres the problem: i've had no problems with the clutch that i know of but as  soon as i put it in my gas mileage went down and now it's gotten terrible. so i'm wondering if i need to replace my flywheel or if something else might be causing this decrease in mileage. it drives relatively well, still has decent power but every so often, it will take a second to grab. i do have an oil leak somewhere in the bell housing but it's not major so i'm thinking that next time i drop the tranny, i'll take a look at the flywheel and clutch.
lets not and say we did.

Well I don't think its the flywheel causing the milage decrease, but its probably the oil leak causing the clutch to slip which in turn is causing the loss of MPG's.

Ceramic and copper clutches are horrible "long term" clutches.  From my personal experience with both in daily drivers I've had in the past, they'll begin to slip after a while, oil leak or not.  Yes, they'll also beat the hell out of your pressure plate and flywheel.

My advice would be to ditch that ceramic turd and get a nice organic disc.  And fix your oil leak.  :)

Any small amount of oil will cause it to slip. Its just the nature of the beast. Is that causing a loss in your mpg? I have no idea. I am putting a 1600 lb stock style Marlin clutch in my DD though. No ceramic for me! Oh, and a Marlin flywheel too, because mine had some nice deep groves in it.

i've been thinking about getting a heavy duty organic clutch just because i've heard they're just as good as ceramic only not ceramic. and i do plan on fixing the oil leak i'm just not sure what it is. my rear main is new and i RTVd the crap out of the cover plate for the input shaft and it's still leaking.
lets not and say we did.

Im about to put a ceramic in my 91 DD... don't be worried about her, and do note that it's your oil leak thats making it slip. make sure you have that flywheel checked out and make sure that it was done correctly, and make sure it was ground down to MC specs.

i think what i'm gonna do is pull the tranny and get a resurfaced flywheel from marlin and a input shaft cover plate gasket from toyota and take a look at everything else again. not sure when i'll get the time but i'll do it. the only way i know there is a leak is because oil comes out from the hole and boot for the slave fork every once and a while.
lets not and say we did.
