92, EFI fuse keeps popping...
« on: May 12, 2008, 10:54:13 AM »
I did a motor swap this weekend.. I drive about 20 min and the EFI fuse pops and sends me to the side of the road :) I was just looking for a little list of things to check.. Ive got to drive the truck tonight about 2 hours and I would rather not just keep shoving fuses in it since I know thats not the right way...

I know already I forgot to put the ground back from the intake manifold to the firewall. My chassis ground is in pretty sad shape too, covered in oil /pretty beat. I am hoping this might just be the problem...

Things I have checked:
AFM (swapped it with another good one, no difference.)

Things I am going to check:
Harness wiring, specifically around the O2 sensors
Harness wiring, specifically around the fuel pump.
Adding some grounds, including putting the ground I forgot back.

Anything else I am missing?

I had this problem when I went snow wheeling once.  The problem turned out to be the O2 sensor wire got melted to the exhaust causing it to short.  I have read on a few forums of other people having the same issue.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

A friend of mine had the same issue in his 92. The O2 wires rubbed and shorted out on the frame. Good luck!

Do a search for efi fuse issues, I know there are some good ones out there that should have some good info.

I have had the entire harness's out of the truck (all 3 of them) and I've gone over them end to end and I still kept popping that damned fuse after about 20 minutes of driving.  I finally got mad adn put a piece of wire with a couple male disconnects on it and I haven't had a problem since... Not the smartest but it has worked just fine for the last 3+ years....

Thanks everyone, it was the front o2 sensor wiring layed over onto the exhaust. The exhaust was rigged up pretty poorly to get me out of the shop and home late at night... so I didn't catch that. I had an exhaust shop fix the exhaust after I fixed the problem yesterday.. then proceeded to drive the truck 150 miles to be dropped off for an exo cage. ;)
