4.3 timing issue!
« on: May 10, 2008, 07:01:45 PM »
Spent the whole day today installing the harness, running some tranny lines etc....
I can't get it to start...back firing back up into the intake every once in awhile. Hold throttle open while turning over and flames arise!!

I have tried finding TDC
Lining up the marks on crank
Attempting to line up rotor button to #1

Whats next??
I'm sooo close!!

Is your dist cap new I've had them carbon track and cross fire and do the exact thing that your describing. oh ya the cap that does that is the flat top one that looks like it has fingers off the sides.

Are you sure you're at tdc. Pull the number 1 plug and either look in with a flash light or use a prob so you can feel it come up. Turn the crank with a breaker bar until the piston is at the top and the timing mark is at the line. Then double check your distributer alignment.
My pulley had a couple of lines on it so it took me awhile to figure out which one was right.

I attempted to be at TDC a few different times. There are 2 marks on my crank. One is marked white and one is a simple line. I think fiding TDC is what I'm struggling on...honestly I'm not sure. 4.3 in the yota does not leave a lot of room on that side to see where the piston is. Is there a simple way to find TDC? Do the marks on the crank put you at TDC?

you can use a compression gauge take the gauge off just have the hose screwed in bump the engine over when it gets to tdc youll feel the compression shoot out of the hose just go slow. thats how i do it when im not sure about the timing marks.

ok, when the hose blows out I'm at TDC and I should line the next groove to zero. When your a TDC..it is not at zero by default correct?
