aussie up front question
« on: May 09, 2008, 09:33:23 AM »
finally got my truck put back together with the aussie locker up front.  when i have the tcase in 4 and the hubs locked, the steering is ridiculous.  i can't steer.  i thought maybe when i push in the clutch it will ratchet like the back does when i push in the clutch, but it doesn't.  is this normal?  is there any way to make it steer easier?

Yeah, sound pretty normal to me.  Both of your front wheels want to pull straight ahead.  When you are trying to turn, each tire is fighting being turned.  It even gets worse on super high traction surfaces such as the slickrock in Moab.  Talk about tough steering.

My solution, Hydro assist.  Makes turning in 4 wheel drive a breeze

Best steering mod you can do besides high steer!  One handed steering in the rocks is great.

Yeah, I run a Hayden 401 tranny cooler.  Works perfect for hydro assist.  I'm still using the stock PS pump with the restrictor drilled out.  Here's my setup.

The only thing I need to change is a larger reservoir.  Once the fluid gets warm, the pump gets louder.  More fluid would stay cooler and work better.

I used these two threads for reference when tapping my PS box and drilling out the pump.

I had an aussie up front and never really had a hard time steering it, even without hydro assist.  Are you trying this on the pavement just to see how it reacts?  If so, I think it will be better once you get in the rocks/dirt.

:D  Hardest turing in the world.  Thought I was going to take the wheel off the column..   Tires aired down, 4x4, on cement, turning wheels while truck was not moving.  Near impossible.  :D  Now when you get out into the wheeling world.  You'll find that dirt is easier to turn on, rocks tend to have some sort of debree on them and not as difficult to turn on as pavement,  and it's easier to turn while truck is in motion.  (more motion, easier to turn)

You do realize you've just admitted to being a web wheeling right?

:P

Add, hydro assist does make it stupid simple to turn if you find that you don't want to struggle with turning.  Stupid simple on any surface.

web wheeling?  :slap:  we're getting ready to do rubicon again for memorial day weekend and i don't want to end up constantly jumping out of my truck every minute to unluck the hubs so i can steer.  i'm definitly going to look into the hydro assist though if my steering ends up being a problem when we go.

It will not be as bad on the trail.  Try it out before you drop a load of $$$ on hydro.  Of course the hydro is nice if you can afford it.
