drive shaft ??
« on: May 01, 2008, 02:20:42 AM »
Tomarrow Im going to go buy a 1985 toyota, standard cab, long bed, 22r, 5 speed, dual cases, detroits front and rear, all pro 6" springs, all pro X-over, 36" swamper TSL's and plenty of body damage :gap:.

The only problem is that the dual cases where just put in and the drive shafts have not been modified yet. So my question is how much would it cost to get the shafts modified or to get new ones made?

thanks

Call a local driveshaft shop and ask them.  :)

Can you weld? You can do it yourself if you know how to use a cut off wheel on an angle grinder and how to weld.

You will want to move the CV shaft to the rear and the rear to the front.

If you want to try it I can tell you how I do mine without spending big bucks having a shop do it.

If not seek professional help.

I got my rear DS retubed with new u-joint for around $160. They replaced the .076 wall metric size tube with a .096 wall standard tubing...didn't have the know how at the time or welder.
For the front...hahhaha around $350 for a new one...I did the square method instead for $40 coast of tubing.
Side not...I have sense busted the .096 rear. I now have drill stim pipe....that tube is crazy thick.....and have yet to bend it....got it for free. I did the front with my Lincon 135 and rear with a 220 stick.
Mike

here you can see my front square and rear drill stim...the paint is marked up from Rocks but it is still straight.
Also the Driveshaft shop will need to know the measurments from flange to flange to dertermine how long to make yours...you will also have to take both parts of the rear driveshaft in.

Can you elaborate more on what this tube is?
If you still have control you aren't going fast enough

The tube is made for drilling wells. After a buddy busted up his rear drive shaft. SORV was kind enough to hook him up. And I took the scraps. I later made mine.
Here is the difference between .096 (drive shaft unlimited on the right) and drill stem pipe(on the left).

The tubing is smaller but I tell you 1000 times stronger.
