Electric fan measurements.
« on: Apr 30, 2008, 05:19:09 AM »
I don't have access to my truck at the moment, but I found a 14" electric fan for $45, shipped.  Thing is, it's 2.5" thick.  Will this fit between the engine and radiator in an '81?

Thanks!  I can't wait to get back so I can work on my junk.   :beerchug:

I have a 3 core radiator in my 85 and my e-fan is about 2.5" wide also and I've about 3/4" to spare so you should be fine.

BTW what's the CFM rating on the fan you're looking at? I don't remember, but I think the min on a TOY is around 1,800 cfm. Anyone?

Permacool says 1600 CFM for a four cylinder, and it's a good thing I found that before I bought the fan.  I found a 14" Procomp fan for less that flows 2000 CFM.  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PROCOMP-14-INCH-ELECTRIC-RADIATOR-COOLING-FAN-14-BLADE_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33600QQihZ016QQitemZ260233795744QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Or if it is one of those fans that zip-ties flat to the radiator make a fan shroud for it. It will cool it better.

No idea on the temp.     I set it so that the needle stays in normal position and so it cycles on and off at idle (about 20% on time at 80 degrees outside).

It has a very large range.   I think it was 100 degrees low, and there was still adjustment left with boiling water (212).      Since it's not in the water, but next to the radiator (or fins depending on how you mount it)  It would tend to be lower than water temp.

The fan is round, so you want one that will cover as much of the radiator as possible but not hang over the edges
