Critical Hi Steer install question
« on: Jul 09, 2004, 06:08:06 AM »
Hello! This weekend I am finally going to install my hi-steer, and I've been reading up on the issue here on various thread and over on pirate...
My question is this:  IF after everything is put together, and I have the box mounted as high and forward as I can, and there is contact with the pitman arm and spring, is there enough adjustment in the system to just install a flat or flatter pitman arm without tearing it all down, re- mounting the box and starting over?
I have The Fear.
I cant wait to install this expensive stuff thats been sitting in a crate for months in my garage and I want to do it right!

cant tell you for sure since i cant predict how your setup will turn out.
but there are flatter pitman arms you can buy.
get it mocked up first and double check it all before cutting an welding.

Skys and OTT sell less drop pitman arms as well as flat ones.  I have the same trouble due to too much flex.  I am also lowering the front spring hangers a bit to help.  I can't run a flat one since it will hit the frame.  I will use one of the less drop ones to keep it out of the springs.

also dont forget to leave a little room between the frame and pitman arm to clear the castle nut.
or you will have to notch the frame to clear it.

I don't know if it will work but it is worth a try i guess.  You can flex the truck with just the stock steering and then measure how much room you have inbetween the frame and the spring.  Then when you go to put the box on you know how much room you have to work with.

Thanks for the input guys, it appears that I will no prob with the pitman arm- The problem is with the tie rod hitting the top leaves.
I figure it's on account of the damn degree shims and the problem would be solved with dropping the front spring hangers 1 inch.
I'm wondering if MarlinCrawlers front spring hanger for the SAS kit would work on a truck that already had a solid axle- an 82 truck...
Hmm mmm
