New diff break in questions?
« on: Apr 18, 2008, 02:35:17 PM »
I am following the recommendation on the Marlin page.  Driving easy and doing a 20 mile drain, and a 500 mile drain.

2 questions?

1. What does taking it easy mean?  The diff gets pretty hot under normal highway use.  Is cruising down the highway at 70mph ok?  It would be pretty difficult to put the miles on my truck otherwise.  And they say no hard acceleration, well its a Toyota and it doesn't do any hard acceleration, despite my attempts to try.  I assume this means no WOT in 1st gear.  What about passing on the highway at 1/2 throttle?

2. How do you break in a front diff?  I can't drive in 4wd on the street so how do I put the necessary miles on it?

Just put it in 4hi and drive it with the hubs unlocked, that will do the drive side of the gear. After that put it in 2hi and drive with the hubs locked that will take care of the coast side. As far as the highway driving goes I would keep it 65 and below, you don't want to get it to hot without letting it cool down all the way a couple of times.

when I got new gears, I was told

20 mile and 500 mile fluid change
max speed 55 for the first 200 miles. (that was painful)
no WOT

Same as toyguy86 said about the front

Question about the hubs thing... why not just keep the hubs locked and take it out of 4WD when turning?

Since I have to pull the front driveshaft to install anyway, can I lock the hubs and drive it around.  Or is it just better to leave it in 4hi unlocked?

Locking the hubs will only do the cost side of the gears, you have to be in hi4 with the hubs unlocked to do the drive side, that way the xcase is actually driving the gears.

If you didn't make it, and it ain't broke, you didn't try hard enough.
