question on installing aussie locker in straight axel
« on: Apr 18, 2008, 10:36:15 AM »
well, my wife just bought me an aussie locker for my birthday, and now i'm going to put it in.  i want to try to get it done in an afternoon, because thats the only time i have.  everytime i've had to get into the front end for whatever reason, r&p, bearings, and what not, i've gone through the hub and taken everything out.  i've seen people do it where they take the knuckle bolts out, but i don't want to get into and have all kinds of bearings and crap fall out and not be able to put it back together.  has anyone taken the front end apart this way?  a walk through would be great.  if you have any pics, even better.  thanks again.

Pull locking hub cap and remove snap ring.
Unbolt seal/felts on back of knuckle.
Unbolt brake caliper and tie out of the way. (can be skipped if you have long brake lines)
Unbolt steering arm. (leave bottom knuckle cap alone)
Pull entire outer knuckle assembly off of axle.

I always have trouble getting the thing back on.  It gets hung up on the hub gears and that thing is heavy, so I usually take the locking hub all the way off.

I just follow the directions in the FSM. I have yet to try Camo's.

If you are not going to replace the birf, no need to take off the hub gear snap ring.  You just want to pull out the enitre axle to get the 3rd out.  the birf can stay in the knuckle.

Makes sense to me.  ?

good tip.  If your brake line is long enough just pull the steering arm and the felts and pull the knuckle w/ axle out a little.  Never thought to try it, but it should work.
