Tire Fit Question
« on: Jul 07, 2004, 06:40:56 AM »
Gonna order a set of tires in about an hour or so, but I have backspacing issues.  '85 runner, extensive fender trimming, buying 35-14.5-15 boggers, What is the largest backspacing I can run without clipping the springs?
I know the 2.5 rockcrawlers would probably do it, will 3 inch backspacing work...anyone with wider tires pls help!
Thanks!

3 inch would get you in the ballpark but they would still rub a little
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

yes it is a very common backspacing.  The black wheels from my rig at Goldendale were 3 3/4" and they rubbed with 35's.  If I had the ifs hub spaw done then they would not have touched as they would have effectively been about a 1" backspace.

I'm running 3 3/4" back spacing  on my 84 runner with stock rear axle and no spacers. I have allpro springs in the rear and the 36X12.5 rub on the frame. Oh ya 5" springs

Ya LILSWAMPER...Smaller backspacing shoves the tires out farther = increased trackwidth for stability and keeps the tires off of the springs.  Drawback-Johnny Law gets to see more of your tread.

I went with the 2.5 inch rackcrawlers...geez though, they are getting a little pricy with the steel prices the way they are...

Hopefully within two weeks I'll get some pictures of the tires on the truck...Going 0 lift so the sawzall has been getting some excersise!

It depends on where you live...CT says no tire sticking out past the fenders and at least 50% rear coverage with mudflaps.  I plan on rigging up some removable mudflaps for road driving that can be tossed in the back on the trail.  I don't know what I'm going to do aboout the fenders though???  Maybe some creative body work??
