what do you all think of the 18R-GU????
« on: Apr 07, 2008, 09:05:16 PM »
I have this motor sitting around. I bought it about 13 years ago when i was a kid and tore into thinking i would rebuild it and put it in my 81...it is a DOHC dual sidedraft mikuni carbs. all lower parts and pieces are just your typical 18R, the head and cams... :dunno: well like i said, it has been 13 years and still not sure if i am ready to put it in or get rid of it...what do you all think?!?!?!

Agree, try and find a mid 70's Celica GT to put it into, would be a sweet little ride. Apparantly the head on those RG's is made by Yamaha, so I've heard.

I have a couple friends that run those in their old Mango's (Corolla's) and Celica's that they run in SCCA events.  They rev like crazy and make some serious power.  If I recall, it's pretty tough to find head gaskets for those in the USA.  If you're in CA near Oakland my friend owns a shop and he builds those engines for a lot of his racing friends.  That 18-RG makes some serious power

the head is yamaha...look at the first pic  :eyebrow:

Yamaha designed many heads for Toyota including the infamous 4A-GE wide valve angle head.

My friend up in Tollhouse has two 18R-G engines, 1 complete and 1 missing some parts.

Of course if you live in law infested states such as California, it will be illegal to use that engine since it was never offered here in the US.

If you take the compression ratio up a bit, then you'll have a cool and unique little power plant

A buddy of mine put one in his first gen 4x.  But he never got the truck running.  Supposedly, the guy he got it from, got it from a guy that used to race it in the the truck races in the 80's, the races in the LA stadium.  The name of the races escape my mind.

High rever of a engine!  It would be a cool desert racer motor.  :yesnod:

My buddy also has a set of mudder tires that have the name swamp thing on the sidewall in white letters!

well I see it like this.

What you got is one of those "cool things" that  every one wants/drools over         But it's a moter  So if you don't have a use for it   there no point in keeping it if you need $$  for shop suplies that will get used like a " air compressor"

yes it does, the only thing that i am missing is the flywheel, but that is just a standard 18r flywheel. infact all bottom end parts (rings, bearings, pistons...etc) are 18r and if i am not mistaking even the head gasket is 18r...

I have a 73 (use to be 2wd) 4x4 hilux pickup that I still have the original 18R-C engine from. I'm in the middle of doing a slow rebuild of this rig and always wanted to put the Yamaha head on it, but could never find one. Was thinking of putting a 22R or maybe a 2.8 in it, but now I've come up with a new question. So where are you located at and how much do you want for it?

i only want $600 for the entire motor...do you want just the head or the head, mikunis and timing chain? the motor is complete with wires, starter, alternator, all covers, distibutor, ... everything but the flywheel  . like i said i bought this 13 years ago and was stored in my parents garage under cover so there is no rust. i joined the navy and have had no time for it. i paid $800 for it, but it is becoming a commodity and is just waisting in my garage now. i just want it to go to a good person that has a good use for it...!!!

Myself and the engine are located in Fallon, NV (89406)

(should i move this to the for sale topic)?????

OOOOHHHHHH, I want I want!!  Best thing that could be done with that is to stick it in an old hilux 2wd or celica.  I don't think they're even decent for 4wd because of the torque issues, but on the lighter rigs they'll do much better.  I hear they have a lot of power potential too  :wink2:

Damn I'd love to take it for $600, I'm in CA and shipping willing cost almost twice that alone. Good luck selling it.
