RUF's and Front Springs Q's
« on: Apr 03, 2008, 12:41:11 AM »
Alright so here's my idea.

stock 87 rears are 46", if im correct.
stock 84-85 fronts are 45"

87 rears by themselves net 1-2in of lift and are too soft.

So here's my question to someone who actually has a brain and can USE it.
i searched and didnt get my question answered.  :screwy:

lets say i use the Main and send leaf from the 87 and possibly the overload.
could i add in some of the stock 85 fronts to net more like 4-5in?  :dunno:

let me know, im kind of curious.

Id like to know before i go and get a new truck or get parts together for an SAS.
So ill know what i need and when to get it.  :help:

Thanks my pals.

you arent going to get 5" out ouf a hybrid rear pack unless you add in some leaves with more arch then your springs currently have, or lift springs from otehr manufacturers... my bet it the rears, and the front have sagged, adding more leaves does not mean gaining lift... you could have 30 leaves, and if they are all negatively arched

i dont know if you can rearch them yourself, but i dont htink so.... i beleive it takes special equipment... also rearching springs i would say is jsut a temporary solution, they will sag again....

ive seen some pretty sweet deals on suspens stuff, i would jsut buy the eral stuff if you are that worried... there is a set of springs on the norcal craigslist right now for $100 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/pts/628393374.html

I believe that both '85 and '87 are actually 47" long IIRC.
I am running the first three springs from an '85 pack in stock location, then I ran 3 more from an '87 pack cut down 4" per side underneath it. So 6 leaf pack total with the usual drop hanger/front crossmember and some sky boomerang shackles. I would say I got 4-5" of lift from it.

During installation:

Ride height on 34's immediately after:

Hope that helps.

:yesnod:

They all come out different depending on how you build them. I usually pick the springs with the most arc in them.

Here is mine with what figures out to about 1" lift with 37's. 5 leaf pack using the thick bottom spring.

pm 79coyotefrg, he is the spring mix and match master. he can tell you what specific leaf from a specific year of a specific make to gain what you specifically want. is that specific enough.

Can any of these be done without changing over to highsteer?
It takes a long time to achieve "instant" success.

well this 84 pickup, mentioned in my buildup..

the front springs are negative arched... so i cant use the main leafs from it.
if ended up getting the truck.

so ill probably go to junk yards and try and grab some lift springs to mix in.

I have been very happy with it, I fit 36's with no rubbing. Worst case, you unbolt it, throw in another leaf. Not a big deal.

I would save up and convert to high steer, it is 100x better than push pull steering, seriously.

Wouldn't ya have to shorten the draglink for push pull steering, as well as the ball flip? Your moving the axle forward by installing rears up front, due to the ofset center pin. I have never seen a rears up front mod done without hysteer.

I added s-10 rear springs into my 85 rears when I built my pack. For a friends we used 4" yj springs added into the 1st gen rear springs to create a RUF pack with more lift.

Just be prepared to build, modify, and rebuild, and everything will work out to your liking.Rears up front are a great way to go in my opinion.

I planned on doing the Ball Flip and some work.
I basically want to get it up in the air more [when i have the truck or SAS]
and get it ready for High Steer.

I wont be doing too much wheeling this summer...
WORK

So the ball flipped will do.
and from what ive seen and read. RUF's are the way to go.

If I could do over again I would build the same packs, but make a hanger with more drop.

My 7-leaf rear pack with a TG hanger kit has room to fit 37's with ease.

I am going the opposite way, I want to be lower. I had previously cut my fenders, now I just inboarded my rear springs which dropped me a couple inches due to my hanger location, cut my floor and raised the drivetrain for a flatbelly, and I have been considering whether I wanted to put the effort in to cut my hanger off and notch it up into the front crossmember to lower the front.  :disturbed:

Instead of starting ANOTHER RUF post, figured i'd bring this one up from the grave.

what are your guys thoughts on how much to cut off each individual spring?   you have your main leaf and wrap then each leaf from there after progressively get's smaller... but by how much?  does it matter?  i'd imagine the more spring you leave the stiffer the ride.   :dunno:

comments?
