High steer with 2.5in lift springs...
« on: Apr 02, 2008, 07:44:06 PM »
Ok, I seem to remember reading that high steer won't work on a 85 p/u with high steer...  Is this true.  I ask because I have some 2.5in no name springs that I want to put on a 85, but I want to go highsteer at the same time...

I know that I will need an IFS PS pox, and a mounting kit, but why won't it work?

Usually if you don't have more than 3" of lift, most people keep the stock steering and modify the j-arm.  No real need to have hy-steer except to move the tie rod up with that small of a lift.  I would just buy a Marlink and do a j-arm flip.   :twocents:

I am not familiar with a j-arm flip. I will have to research.  However, High steer is nice to have, and since there is a decent chance that she wants to go bigger, High steer is a good idea.  Also, if you do high steer you don't have to mess with the stupid axle link on the drivers side, which limits flex, but is necessary for the push pull system.

umm... I remember hearing something to the effect of wont clear the springs if under 3 inch lift, and even at 3 inch lift its iffy, and much care has to be taken to mount the box and set everything up just right for it to work. Someone that is more experienced than I please help?

Here is the link to that thread.  I've done it on mine with a 3" home brew lift and it works good.

so do you still need a drop drag link with this set up?

Yes, that would be the best unless you want to modify the stock drag link.

What about no lift? would it work? i want hysteer before i lift. I dont see why it could not work without lift, i guess am missing something with hysteer, for some reason i thought you could put a hysteer on a toy without lifting it. maybe am wrong.

Can anyone explain what actually interferes, and when (ie full steer, all the time, left steer?)

because with hysteer  the  ifs box is used  and with no lift  the spring will be smacking the  ifs  steering box

NO  if you dont have a lift  DONT  histeer

Umm, i dont belive it!, you have to mount the ifs box the right way so it wont hit the springs. Am going to try it hopefully this year, and i will post what happened.

I would suggest that you take some measurements before you start disassembling your rig.   :twocents:   Good luck, take lots of pics and let us know.

so I am guessing that it works better with marlin springs and hanger because it moves it fwrd not just up??? So, it seems to me that the IFS box sits mostly above the frame...

I would think that lift springs would hit it when they are at full compression? Or is this why you HAVE to use the bump stops?

When you add the front spring hanger it does move the springs forward and down and also a lift spring has way more arc than the stock springs which are sometimes flat.  That is why most people don't do hy-steer unless your lift is more than 3".

The bumpstops are to keep your springs from going into a negative arc and bending the springs but it does also help to keep the spring from hitting under full compression.

And sometimes the stock springs are negatively arched and riding on the bumpstops like mine!

Now that I think about it, I e-mailed MC :turtle: about this like two years ago, because I wanted high steer on my 85. I was told 3 inch minumum to do high steer. I will see if I can find the e-mail and get the rest of the info from it.

It could be made to work if you dont mind limiting you uptravel to oh.... about 0.00".  :gap:

I run high steer with about 2.5-3" of lift. I have a two finger gap between my bumpstops, and the tie rod end on the pitman arm rubs the top of the driver side spring. It works good in the rocks, not so smooth on the way to the rocks.

Ya i guess you cant you put hysteer on at stock yota. According to allprooffroad.com, you have to have at least a 4'' lift to install hysteer.  ;)

If you use bumpstops set right and a flat pitman arm you can run 2" springs with no problem.  Much nicer to drive too. :)

When you mount the steering box with a flat pitman arm mount it as high as you can leaving about 1/4" between the arm and the bottom of the frame.  You'll need to notch the bottom of the frame where the castle nut for the drag link goes above the pitman arm.

Yes its a bit of work but its way worth it in the end. ;)

Won't work because unless done perfect, odds are your PS box BIG nut will hit your spring on compression.  You will need to either notch frame, buy flat or less drop Pitman arms or limit travel to prevent rubbing.  Drag link has better chance of rubbing on the spring on compression as well.

Mock it up, cycle your suspension and make sure everything clears before you weld.

The cookie cutter answer is 3"+ min.  But you can make it work with less.

If you toss the yota steering box and use a scoutII bot mounted around the motormount you can run high steer with less lift than that...  its a forward swinging box and it causes everything to clear beautifully.

wait intell you get new springs otherwise you well end up tearing the steering box mount off the frame and redoing it, and that sucks.

I wonder if i could use the scout2 box like WT said, on the stock yota. and then run the high steer like that, the only problem would be how would i make it hook up to the scout box?....
what about the chevy sagniaw box's

Check my $300 build thread in the projects section.  I have good pics of how the box mounted and how it sits in there.  If I had to do it again I'd use a stock waggy pitman arm, its closer to the length of the steering arms so it'd work the box less.
