have long, will travel? ok, that ia awful...seriously
« on: Jul 03, 2004, 08:35:30 PM »
I have spent an ungodly ammount of time on boards, tech and vendor sites reading about this general topic. First of all, I'm a novice welder, not ascared to cut, chop, hack, grind, bend, shred, defile or otherwise modify my beloved 91 v6 Toy, as long as the experience improves her capabillity. My question is this: is anyone running a long travel IFS setup, ala Chaos, Downey or similar? If so, what is your experience, ie. benefits, detractors(bad juju)? how does it stack against SAS? I feel I understand the basic assets and detriments of factory IFS vs. SAS, I just want to get as many personal opinions as possible. Gimme testimony, can ya say AMEN! I know the SAS topic is a dessicated horse and I have taken the time to learn what I can from reading about other peoples projects. I have about a zillion questions, but I'll try to keep it under control. This is a disease, isn't it? :crazy:

Look through posts made by Mr4x42u both here and on Pirates.  He has the total chaos setup on his taco, that does not directly relate to you but I know he has answered many a question and asked a lot too of others that have ran their setup on 3rd gens.

i have downey high travel kit on mine.94 toy still t-bar setup.10.5 whopping inchs of travel.first off downey says you need alot of other stuff like shocks and towers.thats a load of bs.i got same travel with some bolt on shocks.second i been replacing ball joints constantly since i put his in.3rg massive amounts of torque through the wheels causes suspension to go way up in ft and toe goes way in.basicly well im cutting it out.its not been in that long ive went through 3 sets of upper and lower balljoints and a bunch off idler arms bent a pitman arm.control arm mounts are bent back.ifs isnt worht investing in if your serious about wheeling.now if your into long fast dirt roads go for it.personal opinion cut it out use it as a anchor cause it aint much good for anything else.

Lets look at this.  SAS swap-how much it will cost about.

usable straight axle = $250 about                                                                     250
cross member with spring mounts- home made = $70 about                                  70
shocks = $80 about                                                                                          80
springs = anyware from free to above $200                                                        200
driveline = anyware from free to $200                                                               200
shackles = $50 about                                                                                        50
steering - highsteer = $400 about                                                                     400
bolts = $20 about                                                                                        20
                                                                                                                  1270     about

Well less then 2 grand of done buy yourself.  All prices are approximate.
Or you could use straight axle conversion kits and still be less then $1500.

Where is Prosser WA? Close to Spocompton? So, when you guys all die from cirrhosis and lung disease, can I have your trucks? :wave: Seriously, thanks for the input. Sounds like SAS is the way to go and thats what I was kinda hoping for anyway. I picked up my front donor axle this AM AND an 8000lb winch, for 75$ from this old guy's rotten 82 truck.  I wanted the whole thing, but no rear axle and no trailer available. Winch is labeled "Chicago", never heard of it, but hey, price was right. I'm tearing the winch down now. I think it's just the solenoid, cause no initial current. Anyway, I'm rambling. I will not attempt the actual swap until I have some more welding JUJU, but will get the donor stripped and totally rebuilt in the meantime. I don't think I'd pay someone to do the SAS even if I wasn't a too po' ta die school teacher. I'd sure like to have someone like White Trash looking over my shoulder, guzzling Dew, but I want to learn how to do the whole thing myself. I have never seen an SAS around here and I could corner the market!

Thats it lil swamper.  Ive been trying my damned hardest to stay the nice cool calm and collective person that i always am but now you gone and done it.  Is there really any reason that you see fit to post your useless drivel all over the board?  If you have questions great ask away, but you very rarely ask questions you just post useless crap that has nothing to do with tech.  This is a tech board as a rule and it would be nice if we could more or less keep it that way.  If you want to have your little conversations somewhere go right ahead and do it.  But keep it in the off topic forum!!  Dont just post this nonsensical crap all over the place please!  I have nothing against you asking questions but everytime I come here all I see is that the last post in almost everytopic is by you and there is never anything of interist in your posts.  you have been here just a couple of months and you have already gotten up to over 800 posts.  I could count the posts that are worth keeping on one hand!  So please dont feel like you are required to respond to everypost on the board.  Especially when it says Paging white trash-just the one guy, no tall the rest.  Do you think he typed that because he was bored?  No he wanted me to respond not everyone else, but you saw fit to respond anyway, I just dont get it.
