how tough are those
« on: Jul 02, 2004, 04:15:57 AM »
Just asking before i order r&p sets to my toy 61 series axles.

Has anyone ever broke those 4.88 or 5.29 gears, which one of them is tougher or is there any difference.
Smaller pinion is easier to broke or am i wrong??

Car is coming to quite normal use 60% road and 40% off.
37" wrangler mt/r tyres.

I am running 5.29's in my toyota 8 inch axle and turnin 36's and have yet to break a R&P but thats with a 22R . As for strength you are right about the pinion and the 4.88's pinion is bigger that the 5.29's.

what's a 61 series axle?

4.88s vs 5.29 is kind of a wash.  if you were THAT concerned about strength you'd run 4.10 v6 thirds, or go up a notch(to something like a dana 60 or ford 9")

A 61 series is a fj 60  toy landcruiser with a turbo diesel, widely spread around the world exept USA. They use bigger axels than any hilix/4runner and v6 thirds dont fit they are too small :headscratch:

im pretty sure the 9.5" axle was in landcruisers up till 91. then the new lancruisers used a version of the 8". but im sure u would be fine running a 5.29r&p if you could find it. otherwise the stronger 4.88 is the route. (i hope im right on the the axle :dunno:)

I've gone thru two sets of 5.29's in my V-6 rearend, I finally replaced them with 4.88's and have not had any problems. I run 38" Sampers SX's

I'm still running the 22R what are you running or brand of gears ?
