On my 85 truck, I always ran mine around 30-35 psi on the street, near max
(40-50 psi I believe) for highway trips to reduce rolling resistance, 15 psi for wheeling in the dirt and 8-10 on the rocks in Moab.  Now I get to learn what works again with the 4Runner and 35's.
1989 4Runner: Dual Ultimate (Inchworm front & Marlin 4.70 rear), Marlin Twin Stick, 1200-lb clutch, 4.88 R&P, Aussie Front, Detroit rear, 30-spline Longs, Long hub gears, ARP hub and knuckle studs & 35x12.50 Cooper STT PRO tires.  Marlin rear bumper & sliders.  FROR front bumper.  SAS with Alcan springs & Rancho 9000XL shocks.  Budbuilt Bolt-on traction bar.  Custom Interior Cage by Those Guys Rod and Customs.

Max reccomended for 33x12.50-15 BFG AT K/O's is 35. For mine, DD work vehicle with trailer, I run about 28 F/R. the tire just barely bulges at the contact area.
It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

I run 32 in the fronts, 28 in the rears on the road, and about 8-10 or lower when necessary while wheeling.  33x12.50s

I check tire pressure whenever the Detroit starts acting funny...usually one full tire and one with about 10 PSI. :twocents:

OK, this is for street driving.

1. Take a piece of chalk

2. Draw a line across the tread on one tire

3. Move truck forward until the chalk begins to wear

-If it wears away on the outsides and stays in the middle, add air to the tire

-If it wears in the middle, but not the outsides, remove some air

4. Repeat steps 1-3 until the line all disappears at the same time

5. Write down that PSI

6. Repeat steps 1-5 for the remaining 3 tires

Do this while tires are warm (driven) to get it exact for normal driving.

I do this with my truck everytime I change the weight in my truck with 100 lbs or more. My front tires stay around 28 PSI and right rear is 32, and left rear is 35. This setup keeps the line disappearing equally across the tread on my tires. Yours will probably be different. This setup, IMO, keeps the tires from wearing irregularly. It takes all of 10 minutes after the first couple times. I keep the number written in my owners manual. Good luck!

Ok, let me rephrase, anytime I change the weight that will STAY IN MY TRUCK FOR MORE THAN LIKE A WEEK, I do this process. I also do it when I get new tires.

My local tire guy recommended I run  32 front and 24 rear for Cooper STT's. Sounds kinda low but the tires have been wearing really well.
KDX: I'll have to try the chalk, will be interesting to see how close I am with my current pressures.

I lied. I keep 26 in front tires, 29 in right rear, and 32 in left rear. Previous #s where for a different truck.

My 87 which is running stock tire size BFG MTs, runs best with 28 in front and 33 in the rear.  35 is better for lifespan, but it's just at that point where it starts to get "busy" and bouncy.

They're tough tires in any case  Mine have about 6K on them right now and they look maybe 10% worn.

The true bulge can vary depending on rim width, plus you don't want to run them too low and get tire separation going. There is a reason they want you to run tires at a certain pressure. As others have said the higher the pressure the less rolling resistance they'll have but they will wear in the center faster. About the best suggestion I would have is when on the street run them at the vehicle manufacturers specifications not the maximum tire pressure on the sidewall of the tire, that is the maximum that the tire can handle not the mandated pressure. If you notice everyone here for the most part says around 30 on the street and that is pretty close to the vehicle manufacturers spec.

Offroad really depends on what you are doing, mild to moderate wheeling I'd suggest 15 psi., hardcore 10 to 8 psi.

The "chalk" trick mentioned by KDX comes from the racetrack and is a great way to zero in tire pressures.  :yesnod:

It really works best with a big yellow tire crayon because it takes more distance to scrub off the stripes allowing for actual driving speeds and conditions.

I will warn you that if you have poorly matched wheel and tire size you may struggle to get a good wear pattern.  For example a rim that is too narrow for a tire rolls the edge of the tread toward the sidewall regardless of air pressure and a rim that is too wide will exert extra road pressure to the edge of the tread.

This is only useful for asphalt driving and will have no bearing for offroad.

I used to run 12 to 15 PSI for light wheelin' and a bit less for slow rock crawling when I ran 33s...

I run mine at 30 on the street, that's 5 less that suggested by Toyota.

Thats the kind of chalk deal I was talking about. I dunno the actual name, I did not mean like sidewalk chalk. Sorry I did not specify sooner!

My stock specs for my truck are 26 front 29 rear (from the owners manual from 1985).The wear pattern just happened to be pretty good at 26 for the front, but I have a lot of extra weight in the back, so I had to change the rear ones a bit, especially the left rear.

:dunno: I get it from my dad. He uses it at work to mark pipe. He gets it from the regional distributor at work. So I dunno where you can get it. If you ask nice, maybe a tire store will give some to ya.
