i have no clue
« on: Mar 11, 2008, 08:07:22 PM »
OK the truck i bought for my son (a 1980 4x4 with 20 r) ran fine, shut it off one day and when i went to start it 20 min later it kept dieing and would not idle, also there was a noticeable miss at low idle,it will run if you keep the rpm up, so my first thought was vacuum leak so i started spraying carb cleaner and when i got to the back of the carb it smoothed out. i found that the auto choke housing was missing a screw at the bottom and a little piece was missing, long story short i swapped carbs and it fired up and ran fine so i thought it was fixed, that was till the choke started to open then it was back to the same ol crap,it will run at above idle or it will run and idle only when cold, any ideas? i just hate to spend a ton of money if I'm missing something simple  :help:

Do you have a good seal around the base of the carb and spacer and manifold?
I'm not as good as I once was, but, I'm as good once as I ever was.

Mine ran like that....Until I installed a manual choke. I could never get that water choke to work for me.
Autozone has them for under $10. Not sure what the real problem was but It has been 4 years now with no problems......so for me that was the problem
Mike
I by passed the water choke with a peace of heater hose.

Mine ran fine until it warmed up. It seem to run real rich after words and would miss at idle. I had no power at times. A quick fix was a peace of wire to close off the choke some to get me back home.

edit: BTW mine is a trail rig so no inspection.

Something is causing it to go really lean.  If it runs fine with the choke partially shut that than means it needs less air and more fuel.  Find the vacuum leak.

had the same problem, Kinda. I got mine close enough to just deal. Anyway, I did the carb change, did the fuel filter, air filter, plugs, wires, ignighter, ditributer, and still ran the same, a like :pokinit:! so I took it to my mechanic and he fixed all the vaccume leaks and then advanced the timing and it runs great. You can still feel the hesitation a little bit but not near as bad as it was. But now it idles where it should and runs super good! BTW- if you live in cali, you Can Not put a manual choke on! wont pass inspection.
