Topic: Auto transmission and gear ratios

I heard it barely mentioned once before somewhere on here which I cant remember where, that an auto transmission gives you a better crawl ratio or something to that affect I was wondering if any of you guys on here could shed some light on this subject for me by either elaborating on the subject, or if you have a link or something that would point me in the right direction.  My truck has a chevy turbo 350 and a toyota transfer case so some info on this might do me some good.  Thanks in advance.

it doesn't necessarily give you a better crawl ratio, but being super low isn't really as necessary because the auto slips, and you can feather it on and off...instead of running a manual and needing the gearing to slow you down to "crawling" speeds.

I've wheeled with an auto, I loved it, it was an instant crawler uphill, through the rocks or anything flat. Now downhill is different, for the most part no engine braking at all. You will learn to use the e-brake, it is your friend. Nothing really beats true gear reduction, but an auto trans will put you out there quicker and usually with less money involved. When I built my 4Runner with an auto all I did was to it was lift it, lock it and wheel it.
