propane with nitrous?
« on: Mar 08, 2008, 02:36:19 PM »
So after searching it seams no one is running this setup. And if they are than there not posting there resalts.

So I will be putting propane on my 22/20 hybrid with PRP studs, stock lower end and cam. My question is can I put a 50 shot of nitrous on this motor for hill climbes were the motor tries to stall out?

I know it will hold with a gas motor but with the increased compresion of 10:1 and the porpanes 103 octain I am conserned about blowng up the motor or braking the crank. I really dont want to spent the coin for the for forged crank and pistons or an upgraded cam/valve system. Just want to pull the head, throuh the new head on, pop in some studs, put together my pane system and put a bottle on it and go.

So is it going to work?

I'm interested to know how it turnes out. I doubt I would do it as I break enough stuff as it is, but I would like to see it done.

I've seen it done with diesels, although using both as a performance enhancer, not just fuel.  They shoot pane and then juice on top of that.

Well the main problem I see is that when the 900psi of nitrous hits the propaen (which is theoredicaly under vacume pressure) it will blow it out of the cyl. Causing a super lean Fuel to air mixtue.

Or if I were to pre-mix the propane and nitrouse before the mixer I could get to much combustion and plow the head gasket.

my next problem is how do I add more fuel with to the motor with out a bigger mixer? I plan on using an Impco 100 but this mixer will not flow enough pane for a 50 shot. I would have to run an Impco 200 wich would cause the engine to run rich. Because mixers are self regulating I would have to rig up some kind of high pressure solinoid that would open up at high RPM's and allow a presice mixtue of propane and nitrouse into the manofold at the same time.

So do I spen the 100 hours of trial and error to find this perfict mixture and figure out a pre mix system or do I just say F-it and move on? I'm undecided at this point but only time will tell.

Those diesel propane injectors just introduce the 'pane into the intake track, you should be able to inject the extra 'pane need with the nitrous the same way. As far as nitrous blowing out the propane, I don't think that would happen, otherwise nitrous would blow out the fuel in normal gas applications cause the fuel is sprayed in around 14 psi. Another way is to run a small gas tank just for the nitrous system, and use a fogger nozzle tapped into the manifold.

ok, i guess no one is thinking how Nitrous works. once injected the molecules separate and leave only pure oxygen going into the engine. on a gas engine or diesel they sense the incoming oxygen and add fuel or use a wet kit that adds fuel at the same time. all this is done so that the mixture doesn't lean out to much. with a propane system them add propane by how much volume of air is pulled thru the system. i don't see it compensating for the jump in oxygen and will probably create some issues, quickly.
