'91 Runner Help! How will I know if I've got a blown hub?
« on: Mar 02, 2008, 07:01:13 PM »

Hey all, while driving at low speed I had noticed a noise like a tinny rattling-And I thought it might be a loose heat shield or something but today it became a grinding, then suddenly kind of seized up the front end before giving way with a tortured grind and klunk. Now no more noise or resistance at any speed. I just drove it home and I'm wondering what the hell. This is an IFS 4Runner with auto hubs, and the CV boots look to be in good shape. There was no heat on the front axle shafts, leading me to believe that it was not a bearing failure, so I'm thinking hubs maybe? I couldnt quite tell if it waspassenger or driver side, so I'm going to havetake the front wheels off and look for what exactly? How will I know if the auto hubs are trashed with a visual inspection? If in fact it is the hubs, I'll be replacing them with a set of manual locking OEM IFS hubs.

Any ideas and/or help is greatly welcomed.
Always walk a mile in someone else's shoes before you criticize them. That way when you do criticize them, you are a mile away and you have their shoes.

Auto hubs arent the most reliable, but it sounds more like a cv or bearing. You should consider swapping those auto hubs out for some manual lockinghubs. Check it out and let us know what you find.
