Which 22re to buy INPUT PLEASE
« on: Feb 26, 2008, 10:59:37 PM »
I have the option to buy either of these 22re and i dont know which one so i want to know what you guys think.

The first one... 22RE engine in my 86 4Runner with ~ 24K miles on a complete rebuild with Engnbldr parts (268 Torkr camshaft, bearings, pistons, oversized valves, valve seals, H2O pump, oil pump, head bolts) and ROCK gasket kit. Bored .020 over. Compression test done today 01-13-08....155psi cylinders 1-3, and 150psi cylinder 4. Newer 89-95 straight throttle body and upper intake plenum.

The second one..Motor has flat top piston, bigger throttle body, port matched upper and lower intake, offroad cam, all with less than 30K on it. Also has lightened flywheel and new clutch.

Going to pick one of them up this week so please give me some input.. Thanks

Door number 1 would be my choice.  The second one is leaning towards outright horsepower... Too bad r series don't make any no matter what you do to them...  ;)
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

All around performance and dead nuts reliability is in the first one.  Granted a hp engine can be reliable but once you start bumping compression etc things can go wrong in a hurry.

 Door number one sounds sooweet!
22RE .30 over, mild cam, K&N, LCE header, 2.25'' pipe, high flow cat, Magnaflow.
 Marlin 1200LB clutch

 no substitute for 4wheel drive.

I'd vote for neither and get a 2.7 out of a Tacoma.  No matter what you do, a 22REis still a small motor and isn't in the same league as the 2.7

its all relative to what you want out of it.  ( im not an expert on engine building) but id go with reliability.  as far as more get up and go.  make sure you are geared to the right tire and even a stock 22re will get going!!!  my  :twocents:  now you got like 8 cent

Didnt notice a door number 3 offered....

If you want to play that game then why not just put a LS2 in there?  Its sooooo much better than a 2.7. No matter what you do a 3rz is still a small motor...   :shake_head:

Lol.    point taken.

JUst - there's plenty of options if you want more power if you're looking at a whole new engine.

Gotta go for door #1 then.  Oh - and get the heaviest flywheel you can(stock is nearly as heavy as it comes, iirc).  Light flywheels are for racing and not crawling.  It's the deal killer for me on the 2nd one - it sounds like something someone had in their modded Celica.

P.S. when all else fails, good compression is the real litmus test.

Use a 20r flywheel if you want a bit more weight without buying a bling aftermarket flywheel..

I would buy both, give me first pick of the 2, and you can keep what I don't want.
I'm not as good as I once was, but, I'm as good once as I ever was.

i second that emotion,  no matter how built your 22re will never keep up with my 3rz and no matter how stock/taken care of it will never run as smooth or be as reliable as my 3rz.
