hydro assist question
« on: Feb 18, 2008, 10:33:41 PM »
just ordered my hydro assist. i'veread up alot on it. rite now im kinda planning it out, my question is i have some angle iron that would work perfect welded to the front of the tie rod to help it from bending. i have heard alot of people bend there tie rods, i know sometimes its because of ram pushing farther than the steering can accually go. is there any reason not to weld the angle iron on it? toy axle hi steer 37s. thanx

Angle iron looks way redneck and has squat for strength.  Get a piece of tubing or pipe that will fit over the tie-rod and slide it on with one TRE removed.  Reassemble and buzz it on at both ends.  A sleeved tie-rod is much stronger and looks fine.  If your ram tries to push the steering past the stops you can shim the ram to limit the stroke.

I think you should wait to see if you even need to strengthen the tie rod.  Whats the material right now?

Closer you can get the stroke of the ram to the tie rod, and being parallel with the tie rod; the less bending force you'll create on the tie-rod as well.  Keep that in mind when you are mounting the ram.

edited for a typo.
