perfectly stated!   I have two uncles that were in law enforcement, and a great friend that is a seargent for the Utah highway patrol. I absolutely hate the thingy suckers that say   stupid cop, :moon: cop, dumb fuc* cop,   all i have to say to them is who's the first person you call when someone is breaking into your house at night or when someone rear-ends you at a stoplight. theres bad people in every aspect of life and in every line of work. next time you think about bad mouthing the cop that pulled you over for speeding just think......   he may very well save your ass someday!
Thanks

His original posts states that he ran to the scene afterwards and did not see the shooting.  This is what I was going by.

He also said he was out drinking, and from the "typing" he may still be... :thud:

Okay so I just read the article about the boy getting killed while shooting a snake.  First off thats horrible and I cant even say anything other than that.  I cant imagine pulling out my weapon and trying to shoot a snake.  I have killed many of them with a shovel.  Since it was in the tree I would have used a rake to get the snake out or a shovel and just killed it in the tree.  I say this but I was not there and do not know the full story but as a parent or the officer I could not imagine being in this situation.

Topar your points are well taken.  I am not bad mouthing cops.  I'm merely stating that you have to be careful when you shoot.  I don't know if the cop shooting the dog was or wasn't but I have seen many cases in Los Angeles where 50 rounds are fired and 5 connect.  True, you shoot until the threat is down.  But you have to hit your target.  And in the heat of the moment you might not notice what is around you.  Just be careful, you don't want the death of a bystander on your conscience.

Most cops do a good job.  It only take a few bad ones to ruin it for everyone.  I know many cops, some are friends, family, and others since I've worked in many court houses in L.A.  In general I have a good opinion of the work they do.  But when we find a bad one, its hard to get rid of them.  And they tend to protect them and circle the wagons.

Personally the snake case sounds like bad judgment.  That cop was a rookie, but 2 senior officers were present.  Someone with judgment that poor shouldn't be a cop.  And I hope he is nolonger on the job.

As far as the snake situation I cant defend the guy and would not attempt to.  Even as a rookie he should have known better.  I wont bad mouth him cause I was not there.  I would have handled it differently and hopefully the next officer in this position will do so as well. Mostly I was just trying to tell folks on here maybe they should think about what they are saying before they say it.  My father allways told me to engage the brain before you open the mouth.

Topar, although not a cop myself, I too don't like the trash talk of cops.  you guys do a lot that goes unnoticed, and deal with a lot of stuff that most people can't handle/do.  Thats why in my post I said if it really happened how the poster said it did.  I'm still with huhwhye though, shot placement is extremely important.  You may be trained to empty the magazine, but if the bullets don't connect, then they don't do any good.

I've got a ton of respect for you guys, I get to deal with ya'll on regular basis, and regardless of the goodnatured :pokinit: talk (and the not so good natured) I know that when the :pokinit: hits the fan, Reno PD, Washoe County sheriff, etc. come flying like their :moon: is on fire when RFD needs help, and vice versa.

:psss:  Just an FYI, but I believe that the majority of cops in CA carry tazers.  It is becoming more and more common out here for all of them to carry them as standard equipment.

As far as shot placement and knowing where your shots are going I could not agree more.  This is why I am pretty slow to draw a weapon and luckily in just shy of 13 years in services I have only drawn my weapon one time in the line of duty and hopefully will never do so again.  I think I have told you before my sons godfather is a firefighter.  I love this guy like a brother I threw a bachelor party at my house for him had a house full of you stinky arsed firefighters.  Lets just say it made for a long time.  Seriously we allways give each other a hard time.  His Lt. is one of our detectives husband.  Police and fire allways give each other hell but its only love.  Now those damn rescue nerds thats a whole differant story!

My dad always taught me not to point a gun at anything you don't intend to kill. He also told me that a bullet will go 3 times farther than I think it will, and invariably will go someplace you don't intend it to, so you have to be exceptionally careful where you point and when you squeeze.

I personally couldn't do what you cops do, and recognizing that, I have the utmost respect for you. I do think that (most)people will occasionally (usually) make poor decisions in stressful situations, but those of us who purposely work in those kind of environments need to be extra careful to make safe and appropriate decisions. As you stated very well, we were not there and cannot second guess what was going thru the guys mind when he fired. I would hope that he felt it was justified, and he was not just showing off...but we'll never know for sure. The guy who started this thread didn't even see the exact sequence of events and was impaired, which makes everything questionable.

Every field has it's share of "bad apples" and unfortunatly everyone suffers on their behalf.

Just my :2cents: on the subject

I've had good pit's and bad pit's . However I do not blame this on the breed . I am sooo tired of people labeling them as some bad dog . I've seen several breed of dogs that are aggresive . I do agree the dog needed to be put down , but it's just the fact that when people yell pit everything gets out of whack and people go crazy . Here in Arkansas they are banning them in every city and I do not think that is right , I do agree that only respectful people should own them !!!!! Pit Bulls are a wonderful breed and should not be banned all together , yes they have the ability to kill but so does many other breeds . I will never own another breed of dog as for a companion , they will protect you and even die for you , that is how loyal they are to there owners if raised right , can you say the same about your lap dogs ?????????
i cant remember if you ever  got to meet  Nitro,  the dog  that was killed in my wreck,  but  he  could be  a  snuggle bug,  or  he  could  rip  you a new :moon:

i went down one night  to find  a  very bloody  pocket from a pair of levi jeans  near him,  and  blood  on his  lower lip,

i love my dogs,  they are  a very loyal breed, (American Eskimo) and  even though  they  look all cute and cuddly  if you ever come in my driveway  and see both white dogs loose,  you better not get out of the truck
