Fuel Pump
« on: Jan 15, 2008, 05:23:03 PM »
I have a 79 toyota pickup and recently added a 32/36 weber, when I was installing the carb I was removing all of the smog crap that I could.  Now when I try to start my truck I am not getting any fuel.  I disconnected the fuel line and cranked it over and no fuel came out.  I then dropped the tank to check for voltage.  As soon as it was cranked over it spiked at 1 volt and then dropped.  I think that I removed something that I shouldn't oh well.   I bought a in line fuel pump that had a little more psi and removed the intank pump I was curious if anyone had rewired there fuel pump.  it looks pretty easy just run a fused wire from your battery to a relay and then ground your relay and run a wire that is hot when you are in run and then run wire to your pump Just seeing if that is right and Im not going to blow my self up.  Thanks in advance for any help

what???? in a 79??....... i dont think so....... dont they use cam driven pumps on non EFI.....?  make sure you have your fuel pressure regulator set at 3-4 psi, if you dont have one then you need to install one!

A good friend of mine has a 79 with an electric pump. In fact there is no place on the head for a mechincal pump. I know he added an aftermarket pump but not sure what kind.

my 79 has an electric fuel pump and when it died i put an inline fuel pump on the frame rail next to the gas tank. i used the wires from the stock pump.

When I shot the wires I am not getting anywhere near what I need for power and instead of troubleshooting those wires I just thought that it would be easier to just rewire the hole thing.  Just curious if anyone here has done it.

ALL 79 trucks had an in-tank electric pump.  there should be a relay that powers it.  check that.

you could easily rewire it.  Get a generic 40amp 5-prong relay, and set it up off of a keyed (switched) hot signal...
