Just got a VX-6r (5w Portable) to add to the mix... Should be perfect for riding the dirt bike in the back country... and having a radio when traveling... Programming cable should be here soon.

interesting fact, the charger transformer (wall wart) is literally twice the size of the radio... the radio is about the size of a deck of cards (not including the antenna) great little radio

and anyone scared of the test, you shouldn't be! it's STUPID easy... do some studying (the questions and answers are public) and you go spend ~$15 on a test and a few weeks later you are legal.

The American Tech (Entry Level) license is as you say us Stupid easy.. Come up and try the entry level license for Canada. The pass is 70%, but if you score 80% or more you have full HF, and it's about the only license that 90% of Ham will ever need up here.  No sub-band to deal with and when you go to the States you can operate with full EXTRA class Privileges.

Just got licensed.  Now I need to invest in a nice mobile radio.  Been looking at the yaesu 2800r.  Anyone have one of these?

If you just HAVE to buy Yaesu, you should look at the FT-7900R or a FT-8800R. You will find a dual band radio much more useful the a Mono-band 2 Meter. Since 90% of the Antennas you would use are dual band(2 meter{144-148Mhz} and 70cm{420-450Mhz}) why not have a radio that is dual band.

What License class do you have?

Just got the technician.  Wish I would have have taken the general while I was in after the technician test.

I would like a dual band, but they are almost double the price.  I'll have to take a look at the two you listed.

You don't need a radio with a lot of bells and whisles to start off. You must likely will never use them. Go get a nice dual band Kenwood and you will want a yaesu
