Trans swap or just regear?
« on: Dec 14, 2007, 09:22:06 PM »
I drove my tow rig on the highway for the first time coming to work this week and it sounds like it is wound pretty tight @ 70. Got a 87 R30 chevy with a SM465, and the TBI 454, not sure of the gears in the rear end, and no tach to know exactly what I was turning but it sounded pissed off about it. I could just about watch the fuel guage dropping.

One of the guys I work with out here said I should swap in a NV4500, then some one else said just throw in some highway gears in the rear end. I am figureing the rear end would be alot easier and cheeper, but would probably cut down on what I could pull. With the trans swap I could keep the stock gearring and just drive it in 4th  if I was pulling something heavy enough to need to keep it out of overdrive.

Most I see ever pulling with this truck is 2 rigs max, but most of the time just my 4Runner and camping gear. so what do yall think, live with it, or do one of the above things?

There is a fine line between clever and stupid, I just wish I knew when I crossed it.

84 4runner
02 Suzuki V-Strom
95 Honda 1100C1
06 Ram 2500 4x4
(please note, listed in order of preference)

I would probably consider the tranny swap just for the fuel savings when you're not towing.  :yesnod:  Everything else would remain the same and if towing in OD feels ok (unless your load is real heavy) do it.
