is a taco elocker rear worth $400 drum to drum
« on: Dec 14, 2007, 02:49:47 PM »
i have a chance to buy a taco elocker rear for 400 bucks is it worth that price also i have 5.29's in my truck will they fit in the taco third or do i need to buy v6 gears if so witch would be a recomended brand? also will by disc brake stuff from sky-man fit the taco rear sky says it will but i would like to know for sure from someone who has actually done it? and also will the axle shafts from my 86 rear end fit the taco rear? or does someone make a good set of aftermarket shafts for the tacoma rear?

Thanks for all your help its much appreciated Ryan

dude,  the elocker  ALONE  is  easily worth the $400

and yes  v6 gears are needed  for the  elocker,

no  your 86 shafts wont fit in the taco housing,  they are about a inch too short

yukon gears, make sure they are for a v6 application from a trusted source....

$400 is a sweet price for an elocker drum to drum axle

people usually get $150-200 for jsut the 86+

who would be the trusty source? because thats a big worry for me i have been told that when buying gears even if you ask for v6 gears you will still just get 4cyl gears

how big of tires do you want to run? I have never heard of someone breaking a shaft on the taco rear end. I think sierra or yukon would be good just measure it when you get it 8.4" not 8"

i am running 39'' krawlers. i thought the elocker rear was only an 8'' by what i was looking at for a ring and pinion set. do i have to pull it all the way apart just to measure it to find out if it is an 8'' or 8.4'' or can i do it by a vin # check at the toyota dealer or can it be idenified right on the rear end? Thanks

The e-locker is an 8".  I wouldn't second guess about buying it.  Take the housing you have now and modify it for the housing.  You 86 shafts will not work with the taco housing.  There is a writeup on 4x4wire.com.
