turbo into v6
« on: Dec 05, 2007, 09:15:07 AM »
What  all would i need to adapt to replace my current 3.0 v6 with a 22re turbo motor...after reading for a while it seems that most of the needed components would already be there. Experts I need your help...I just got a nice blue 89 and would like to keep it but wanna get rid of my 3.slow!

thanks,
chris

STS turbos are a d**n joke.  Search the web for why... I'm not going to waste my time explaining it when it's been explained and proven time and time again elsewhere.

As for the 22RET swap...  I'm an enormous fan of turbocharged engines, however, in a wheeling rig where simplicity is the name of the game, I'd favor a different NA engine over a turbo engine because there's less to go wrong.  4.3s can be found dirt cheap and will give you 190 HP and 260 ft lbs if you get a CFI.

I know you're going to hate hearing this... but search.  In a nutshell, you'll need mounts, a bellhousing, the engine, and the appropriate hoses, headers and wires to make it work.

not to mention pretty much the wiring and ecu from a donor truck

while the 4.3 and sb chevy motors everywhere and cheap. it's all the adapters and mods that are big $$$ . i've got a 3.0 in my 4runner and yes it lacks low end torque and is a pain in the butt to work on. plus it just keeps on running and i get about 18 mpg. i think the easy best off road mod would be the mc tranny with a low first gear. i think a 89 4 runner would be cool with a toyota 3.4.  190 hp would get it  :burnout: . plus the mounts and tranny would match up.

i am mainly concerned about the gas mileage as I am driving around town alot and am getting around 10mpg...also, I know that i might almost cost less to get a whole new 4runner than to buy all of the mods that it would take. My local junkyard has plenty of new 2gen 4runners that I could pull alot the right materials from  but I just don't wanna have to go through all of the changes if it going to be so painful. Will the 3.4 match up with my current set up with out having to change everything under the hood?

you should be getting a lot better than ten mpg. do a complete tune up and see if you can find anything wrong.  i think the 3.4 would bolt up but i'm sure there'd be quite a few things to change too. i'm hopeing someone well do a clean swap so i check out all the details.

just found this one which is really helpful:  http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=19684.90

I am not very mechanically saavy yet and am regretting not getting a 22re to begin with... The cost that a 3.4 swap incurs is pretty huge plus i don't know how to do much myself. I would love to have it though

that's cool.. i'll have to read the whole thread later. i'd just tune up your rig and wheel it the way it is. lots of people run the 3.0 .. you can always swap to a 22re or 3.4 when the right deal comes up.
