Window probs
« on: Dec 01, 2007, 10:15:05 PM »
I think the teeth on my window crank are striped, I can roll the window almost all the way up to about 3" from the top then it just slips so I push it up with my hands, but if any vibration happens it will fall back down. I have had this problem with every Toyota I have owned 2 1st gen & 3 2nd gen pickups. what makes these window crank systems fail so often. These gears seem to be weak so is there any way to fix them stronger, I don't want to fix theme with stock parts if they are prone to failure. any suggestions would help thnx

I would be willing to bet that the gears are plastic. I took apart some 88 doors a few years ago (failed attempt at half doors) but I do not remember if they are plastic or not. I bet you could figure out how to use a stronger setup from a different vehicle, but it would be alot of custom work.

toyota window regulators are steel.  I haven't seen one strip out, but the pinion gear on them gets wobbly with age and they become a sonofabitch to roll up or down, especially when it's cold. They also have a spring that gets weak.

you can get new replacements for like 50-60 bucks IIRC.  NAPA can get them.

Owned atleast 4 generations of toys and never seen a plastic gear in a window regulator.  I've seen a couple regulators fail, which sounds like your issue, but it's usually because nobody had the foresight to pull the door panel and slap some grease on the gears.  I need to do it on my 91 right now, just haven't been able to get the door panel off without buggering it up.

My dads escort had plastic crap in the regulator. :hahaha: That car was fun! By the time we sold it, it had no first or reverse gear, and had a cracked cv. The paint had all failed, and the windows were held up with duct tape.

One thing you should do to make things easier on the regulator is get some spray silicone and spray it on the rubber window tracks. Do this a couple of times a year it make the window slide up/down easier. This makes it so the regulator does not have to work as hard.

my 84 had steel gears but like what Duffil said there is a steel or aluminum plate with a tapered hole in the middle that the gear spins in that got rounded out and made it hard or impossible to roll up or down and when it did move it would slip.
lets not and say we did.

My drivers side window does this exact same thing, you need to replace the window regulator as I have to also. They are not that expensive you can order them through just about any autoparts store. Currently I just rolle and pushed the window till it was completly closed, drilled a hole in one of the arms of the regulator and slid a bolt in to keep it up until I get a new one.
