Ford 5.0 conversion
« on: Nov 24, 2007, 06:31:11 PM »
I have an old school Ford 289 in my truck now (carburated). I would love to put in a fuel injected 5.0 but I dont know if I can. When I put my motor in I was 18 and stupid. I proceeded to "trim" all of the wires from the existing toy loom at the boot on the passenger side of the firewall (93 pickup). So now everything I need for the 289 works fine but all the extra wire and plugs are gone and tucked back into the boot at the firewall. Did I screw myself? I thought I remembered that the 5.0 conversion loom piggybacked into the existing toy loom. I hope not. Any Ideas?

thanks Big, I can fit the motor for sure; Im just wondering if the 5.0 conversion wiring looms you buy connect to the existing harness (which I dont have :rivers:) or what?

Like a charm. I really like it, small, narrow, dist in front, Very easy to work on- everything just happens to be easily accessible. The 289 (vs the chev 350) is pretty nice also because its a very short stroke (2.80) so you need to rev it up like a 22R to make power. It is kinda nice because it still has more than enough power to idle over most everything in low range but doesnt make its full power till much higher in the rpm range. It works so good that I couldnt even imagine a fuel injected 5.0! Thats why I want one! So about those harness questions... Anyone? ???

It will probably be expensive, but why not buy a 5.0 engine harness? I bet the harness makers would be willing to work with you a little bit to help you figure something out.

try this:http://www.hotrodlane.cc/  there is a guy there who knows more about small block ford conversions than I could imagine.  What front accessories did you use, I'm looking into the same conversion but the clearance in the front looks tight.  The people @ advance adapters use those guys for their conversions, so I'm assuming they are pretty good.

Cool, Ill give them a call. For accessories I ran the stock PS Pump and Alt (just made brackets, then I just plugged them back in) I had to run the Ford Racing Streetrod Waterpump (absolute shortest available). I have just under 1/2" of clearance between my crank pulley and 4 core radiator (Electric Fans on other side of rad). Core support not cut at all, Firewall not touched!  Go Ford all the way!  :beerchug:

a 289 is the I6 right? i'm not great on Ford stuff but because my friend lives on fords, i'm learning quite a bit. i wouldn't mind putting a cummins turbo diesel or a toy diesel in my truck. or if it would fit maybe a 6.9 or 7.3 powerstroke.
lets not and say we did.

Nope 289 is a V8 and the same block as a 302 and the later 5.0 EFI.

289 = 2.80" stroke
302/5.0 = 3.00" stroke

yeah i was asking my friend about it today and he corrected me. he's got a 300 bored out .20 over. he did the math and said that it was about the same size as a 302 just in I6 form. it's in a 67 F100
lets not and say we did.

stock toy EFI and ford EFI wont mate, forien-domestic 4cyl-8cyl no way. painless makes a kit and you need the ford brain. i went with a cab on my 302 to keep it simple. ill go with a propane convertion before EFI. just as good as EFI and as simple as a carb.

Did this to a 89 4runner. It is a 85 302ho C.F.I with a nv4500 from AA. I ordered some motor mounts that were made for the conversion but they did not work right for me. I made some custom mounts for the frame and used the top part of the mounts because I did not want to use a 3 inch body lift on it but used a 1 inch kit.  The thing that took some time for me was working the headers. It uses a 17amp pusher fan with a 100 amp Alt.         (trying to send some a pics)

Northwest Off Road makes Ford 5.0 Conversion stuff for Toyotas but I've never tried them.

YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

I started with the Northwest mounts then had to mod new lower mounts (with the Northwest ones you have to use a 3 + body lift). Worth it since I used the upper half.
On the wiring, think from the point of the efi system has nothing to do rest of the truck and treat them as two things that need to come together at few points (body, lights, fuel pump etc...).
On the MPG , I do not know, the sending unit was toast (I need one). The thing had been sitting a long time because of the 3.0 motor deal. I have a stock 86 runner for the DD.

Trust me, do this or pull one from a yard. If I were to do a E.F.I (8 injectors) I would
use a 86 to 88 302ho motor and harness, but they are hard to find.
Check these guy's out and tell them Slim from Va, sent ya.

ok i dont know why everyone wants to plug in the ford harness in to the toyota harness, i did mine with all for stuff and i hacked out ALL the EFI toyota wire and computer, i used the ford 302 harness from the doner car, painless makes a harness for the 302 EFI you just plug in the haress to a battery and the FORD computer,,,,thats it, the other basic functions of the toyta as in lights are a different harness and wont change, i have a carborated 302 with a C4 and a toyota Tcase, it all fit with no mods to the fire wall, the only problem was it was tight between the rad and water pump, i did some cutting and fit a 22x19 alum rad and a 17in fan on behind the grill. as for the wireing i looked up a diagram of the ford charging system and used the for alt and regulator VERY simle, i used the factory wire for the toyota starter to the ford silanoid, i ran on the stand just hooking up to a battery.   it will work it will fit it dont care about the toyota wireing

Nice Build

I agree, why leave any of the Toy EFI Harness in there.  On that note why waste money with painless or howell, just use the 5.0 harness and modify it.

I built a ffr cobra 2 years ago , built up a 347[stroked 5.0] put apaxton on it and used the painless harness. Although i thought the painless to be a bit overpriced it woked great, it's stand alone so you will not need to interface it into the toyota harness. If you don't have the computer you can contact painless and ask them which code computer will work with their pin arrangement. Mine was out of a 91 gt and i had no problems
it's not me, it's you
