Looks way better without the running boards.  :yesnod:

Ive been looking at a 2000 4Runner here in town.  all black.
According to my research, the 99's and 2000's seem to be the best years...

2000 was the last year of the locker.
the 99's stock rear coils are an inch and a half higher than any other 3rd gen model. After rollover tests, the height was reduced for 2000

I took some pictures for MrsPATaco...I took the running boards off and cut the rubber piece off the bottom of the rear mud flaps...I saw this on Yotatech of all places... It gives the truck an easy, free "lifted" appearance..I think I am going to put some coil spacers in and bigger tires..not sure what though. Anyone know the biggest size tires I can run on this thing without re-gearing/dogging the engine out?

BEFORE with running boards and mud flaps

AFTER with running boards removed and mud flaps cut off (I think it gives the vehicle a more "trucky" appearance)

the underneath was rusty so I started painting it

where did your spare tire go?!

good eye! I dropped it down because it was all rusty to paint and grease it up...this thing came from PA so it did have some rust on it  :headshake:

I would like to build something like this...and I think I will build a set of sliders for it too and put a first gen rollbar in the cargo area..i gots all kinds of idears!   :yesnod:

Man, i think i have caught the BUG! BAD!  :disturbed:

dang so many questions. did you lift it yet? and what size is that spare? assuming its the same as the planted 4. what size did you fit? any re gearing? hows shes do on the highway

I got a 97 runner that is gonna be my excursion fam. camping vehicle. going for dual batts, on-board air, winch rear locker, sliders, bumpers and maybe a sonoran steel lift?

haha lots of questions! i like it....

ya im thinking along the same lines as you as a mild expedition/camping vehicle...same kinda mods you mentioned..

NO, its not lifted yet..it kinda looks like it is though..Im thinking maybe just some coil spacers to start out with to clear maybe 285s? is re-gearing necessaryfor 285's? There is PLENTY of power with the stock tires, does fine on the highway. stockers are 265/70/16 as well as the spare.... Im a runner newb the same as you..learning this stuff right now...lots of info on yotatech and ultimateyota.com  :beerchug:

yeah started on yotatech too but to much crap on airbox mod and stuff thats all I can read about. have you seen the sonoran steel lifts? their kinda high priced but their complete and look to be pretty high qual.

heres the link http://www.sonoransteel.com/ Mods shouldnt be too mad their not really marlin competition

I have heard that you can run 285's with out re-gearing. Alot of people like to go to 4:88's so that there isnt any change. Spacers up front and some new coils in the rear is a good way to go and the cheapest. Im going to be doing a 2.5 inch lift with 285's soon.

I really like that idea for the spare tire carrier. Id like to see how that goes if you make one.

That is kinda the plan for my Runner as well.  as soon as I stop working so much.  Camping/trail rig with mellow lift.

Im gonna try and keep my runner looking as stock as I can all I really want to show off is some tightly tucked sliders and self fabed bumpers other than that pretty stock looking.

whats the largest tire we can fit up under the runner?

Ok, so I'm having some problems with my runner...possibly electrical...

I was trying to go camping yesterday and was in the middle of nowhere...shut the vehicle off and it wouldnt restart for a few minutes (scared the crap out of me)  When it did start, the fuel guage read BELOW empty (which scared me even more, because I was in the middle of nowhere) I drove it to see how far I could go and the guage slowly started creeping up....ok..ok..fast forward to this afternoon...I was going to lunch, go out to my car (in the middle of the city) and it is RUNNING by itself, no keys in ignition, ignition in OFF position and doors are locked. I'm sitting here going, "how do i stop this thing?", tap the brakes and it dies. any suggestions?

someone suggested this could possibly be a malfunctioning remote starter. I was not informed that this vehicle had one if there is one.  :headscratch:

anyways, i know nothing about remote starters...where would i look to see if there was one?

:werd:  or depending on the kind, it won't let you put the car in gear until you actually put the key in, and turn it to the on position.

Basically a remote starter bypasses the steering column and dash electrical, just firing up the vehicle.  Until the key is turned on, nothing else works.  the steering wheel stays locked, the tranny won't shift out of park, etc.

I have no idea about the remote starter problem. But I also have a 99 4Runnner and have problems with the fuel gage and had a problem with starting. Sometimes when I'm out on trails it will say I have a full tank of gas and then go to empty, which I know is wrong. I also had problems with getting it started, I had to change the clutch start with mine to get it to work better, I know you have an auto so this doesn't really work for you but I have the same kind of problems.

About the remote start I would contact the previous owner and see if he had it on the vehicle, If not it might be another problem that we cant see. If there was a remote starter you mine as well get the remote for it since the wiring is already done.

i think i got my problem sorted out....turns out that there was a remote starter installed by a PO that neither I nor the Toyota dealer knew about.....I was freakin out all day yesterday at work...got home looked under driver kick panel and there she was...the magical relay box....

So, I took it to the dealer and had them take it out! Dont want my :pokinit: catchin on fire, leaving me stranded, etc....

I have talked to a couple people that have had the fuel float (or whatever u call it)  stick in the tank when off roading due to off camber so im pretty sure thats what that is.....   :driving: thanks for the help guys
