22RE Exhaust getting red hot!!
« on: Nov 03, 2007, 12:16:09 PM »
I have an 88 Toyota 4Runner I just rebuilt the engine. Bored it .20 over and used an engblder kit off ebay with the bigger cam. My stock exhaust manifold is getting red hot. I noticed this when truck was misfiring and running bad at 1/2 throttle or more, I adjusted timming now Truck runs fine, normal operating temp, timming is between 5 & 8 with jumper in port and exhaust is cut off behind o2 sensor. Exhaust is still getting red hot. Is this hurting my truck and what would cause it. Also I do have all EGR stuff hooked up.

Just got done taking exhaust off of trail rig and putting it on my 4 Runner. This exhaust has a know good o2 with no cat and a flowmaster. Now the truck is bogging out around 3500 RPM. This is what it did with my stock exhaust & cat. Also exhaust still seem to be getting way to hot. I am wondering if it needs a header with me boring it 20 over and putting a cam in it. I dont think the stock manifold resticts it that much though. Need help.

I had this happen with a 18 rc motor it was carbureted ,and the manifold would glow red hot,I never knew exactly what caused it but I always figured it was a lean mixture or timing was off?most likely not too good for the motor, its not because of the displacement, but maybe cam timing?

man i had the grey truck i drive do that one night about two months ago.
it was RED!
like apple red. it lit the whole engine compartment up.

i had to let it cool down on the side of the highway. i dont think it has done it again.
i think it had something to do with the timing chain being stretched and throwing timing off.
it got a timing chain job and i get it back in like an hour. =P

I would replace my o2 sensor, don't know if anyone has ever messed with your afm but if so, it could have been made way to lean.

Here is what I know:

- No Cat. Conveter on it
-Truck runs wosre with a muffler on it (runs fine with open manifold but still glow just a little)
-Adjusting AFM does no good
-Timming is good 5 to 8 BTDC
-Timming is advaning fine
-o2 sensor is good ( took off of trail truck that runs fine)

Help Needed! Driving me crazy

I had this happen because my distributor was off a tooth.  You could see through my manifold.  :o

If my distributor was a tooth off that would make my timming off right. My timming is fine.

An exhaust leak around the O2 sensor and/or head to exhaust manifold......

The O2 sensor will sense you being lean  (exhaust leak will also let air into the manifold),   the ECU compensates by adding fuel.

The added fuel gets burned in the exhaust manifold with the extra air from the leak(s)..... thus really hot manifold
